If you like your European midweek football this is the week for you, with 54 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches being crammed into three nights. The Champions League kicked things off with some of the competition’s favourites beginning to bare their teeth. It was also, incredibly, their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group stage away games. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and a first Champions League goal for James McAtee saw City get their first win of this year’s competition. CNN —Two mistakes from Italy star Gianluigi Donnarumma proved decisive on Tuesday night as Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. In the 20th minute, Donnarumma left his goal line to attempt to punch clear a cross from Leandro Trossard, but he was beaten to the ball by Havertz, who headed into the empty net. But Arsenal would double its lead in the 35th minute when Saka sent a curling free kick into the box. Gabriel Martinelli and Thomas Partey missed the ball, but so did Donnarumma and the cross found its way into his net. CNN —Ollie Watkins’ brilliant last-gasp winner earned England a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and a place in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final. Awaiting England in Sunday’s final is the formidable foe of Spain, which has been unequivocally the best team of Euro 2024 so far. After only seven minutes, Simons – named after Barcelona great Xavi Hernández – dispossessed Declan Rice in midfield and stormed towards the England penalty area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Jordan Pickford and into the top corner. Foden, who was having by far his best game of the tournament, then hit the woodwork himself as the post denied the Manchester City forward a stunning curled effort. England has known little more than disappointment and heartbreak since winning the World Cup in 1966, Southgate more than most.

CNN —England reached its second successive European Championship semifinals after a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland at Euro 2024 on Saturday after the quarterfinal had ended 1-1. Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the decisive penalty to seal the win for England as it booked its spot in the final four having lost in the final at the last edition of the tournament. Nothing could separate the two teams in extra-time and so the game went to penalties. Switzerland’s first penalty from Manuel Akanji was saved by Jordan Pickford and that miss proved pivotal as England’s players dispatched their attempts with aplomb. England will face the Netherlands or Turkey in the semifinals, with the two team’s facing off later on Saturday in Berlin.

CNN —England secured top spot in Group C with a goalless draw against Slovenia on Tuesday, but another underwhelming performance throws up more questions about the Three Lions’ status as one of the Euro 2024 favorites. The team created few real chances of note and were again met by boos at full-time from traveling England fans. England, meanwhile, had been heavily criticized for two poor performances to open Euro 2024: a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark. Slovenia defender Erik Janza and England midfielder Jude Bellingham chatting during the match. England’s slight improvement in the second half, though, will likely have Southgate rethinking his starting lineup ahead of the last 16.

London CNN —When Ed Sheeran wrote “Shape of You,” he probably didn’t have this vision of himself sculpted from sushi ingredients in mind. The British megastar is just one of several celebrities whose image has been recreated using ingredients like rice, salmon and pickled ginger by British food artist Michelle Wibowo. Wibowo puts the finishing touches to Sheeran, whose pun-y likeness is pictured alongside "Eelton" John and British TV host Alison "Salmond" Hammond. The unusual creations were on display at the CasildArt Gallery in London as part of a collaboration with Japanese food brand Yutaka to mark International Sushi Day on Tuesday. “I’m used to creating sculptures from unconventional materials, but working with sushi ingredients was a whole other kettle of fish!” Wibowo said in a press release sent to CNN by the organizers.

CNN —England are off to a winning start in their Euro 2024 campaign, after defeating Serbia 1-0 in the Group C clash at Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for the Three Lions, rushing into the box and heading in a deflected Bukayo Saka cross for the goal in the 13th minute. According to UEFA, since a 2-1 defeat to France at EURO 2004, the Three Lions are unbeaten in eight matches in the competition after leading at halftime, winning six matches and drawing two. England moves atop Group C with the victory, and an earlier 1-1 draw by Denmark and Slovenia. England will next play against Denmark on Thursday, while Serbia will face Slovenia on the same day.

CNN —On Sunday, England will face Serbia in its first game of the Euro 2024 championship, hosted by Germany. Since then, the FA, the European football association UEFA and FIFA , the sport’s international governing body, have visibly upped their anti-racism game. One might conclude, for instance, that Monday’s court decision in Spain meting out prison sentences to three Valencia fans for hurling racial insults, is evidence of European soccer’s new, tougher line against racism. Saka knows UEFA observers will be on duty at every Euro 2024 match and will be on the lookout for racist incidents. I see it as an attempt by professionals who should know better to make a Black player carry the can for a disappointing performance by the whole team.

CNN —Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is one of the most prominent players left out of England’s provisional squad for the upcoming European Championships. On Tuesday, England manager Gareth Southgate announced a 33-man squad which will be whittled down to 26 players for the continental tournament beginning on June 14 in Germany.
