First-placed Bezzecchi (C), second-placed Prima Pramac Racing's Spanish rider Jorge Martin (L) and third-placed Monster Energy Yamaha's French rider Fabio Quartararo pose on the podium after the Indian MotoGP Grand Prix. Last year Poncharal says he bumped into Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, who told him about the potential interest in an Indian MotoGP Grand Prix. As at the G20, the MotoGP race branding also featured the name ‘Bharat,’ rather than India. Bezzecchi is third overall in the championship, 44 points behind Bagnaia after the Indian Grand Prix. “It has been an incredible experience and success for MotoGP to be in India for the first time,” said Ezpeleta.

NOIDA, India, Sept 23 (Reuters) - The inaugural Indian Grand Prix race has been shortened by three laps after MotoGP riders asked for race distances to be adjusted due to hot and humid conditions during practice sessions, organisers said on Saturday. After Friday's two practice sessions, reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia said the conditions were "very demanding". "I thought Malaysia and Thailand were hot but here you feel like you're burning in some parts of the track." Ducati's Bagnaia will carry a 36-point lead over Pramac Racing's Jorge Martin in the 13th race of the year. Bezzecchi clocked the best time of one minute, 43.947 seconds to pip Pramac Racing's Martin by 0.043 seconds for his first pole since the British GP in August. Bagnaia holds a 36-point lead over Martin in the overall standings, with Bezzecchi a further 29 points behind in third. Luca Marini, Bezzecchi's team mate, qualified in fourth place ahead of factory Honda duo Joan Mir and Marc Marquez. "I want to dedicate this pole to a friend of mine that unfortunately left us a couple of days ago." Gresini Ducati's Alex Marquez has been ruled out of the remaining MotoGP weekend after suffering a double rib fracture in qualifying, his team said.

MotoGP cancels inaugural Kazakhstan race
  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
April 26 (Reuters) - MotoGP has cancelled its first race in Kazakhstan due to the circuit not being ready and will not replace it on what is now a 20-round calendar, the sport said on Wednesday. Kazakhstan last September agreed a five year deal for the Sokol International Racetrack outside Almaty to stage MotoGP races. The inaugural race had been scheduled for July 9 as the ninth round. MotoGP is keen to expand its presence in Asia, with India also set to debut in September with a race at the Buddh International circuit near New Delhi. It also takes away a possible 37 points from the championship, with each race weekend now a double scoring opportunity thanks to a sprint race on every Saturday as well as the main Sunday event.
