Republicans flipped another Democratic-held seat in a state Trump carried easily, West Virginia, on Tuesday and were aiming to capture another in Montana. Moreno’s victory also ends, for now, the 50-year political career of Brown, first elected as a state representative in the post-Watergate era. For decades Brown had fashioned himself as an unapologetic liberal and progressive tightly aligned with working-class voters, particularly organized labor. CNN —Republican Bernie Moreno will defeat Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, CNN projects, a key pickup for the GOP in a state that’s been trending its way and putting the GOP one step closer to securing the Senate majority. Moreno emerged as the GOP nominee earlier this year after Democrats helped prop him up in the primary, believing he’d be the weakest opponent. Moreno’s GOP allies also tried hitting Brown over transgender athletes in an effort to cast the senator as too liberal for the state. CNN —The Democratic National Committee is planning to hold a virtual roll call ahead of the party’s August convention to nominate President Joe Biden in order to meet an Ohio ballot access deadline. “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree,” DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement Tuesday. Ohio voters overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion rights, delivering a landslide-sized message Tuesday night to politicians that the near-total ban GOP lawmakers support is unacceptable to the voting public. Ohio voters have rejected a proposal that would've made it more difficult for voters to amend the state constitution, including one measure set for the November ballot that would guarantee abortion rights in the state. For the third time in a year, voters in a conservative state have shot down an attempt by Republicans to make constitutional changes that target abortion. As of Wednesday afternoon, the people of Ohio had rejected Issue 1 by a 14-point margin. Less than two months after the fall of Roe, voters in the Sunflower State rejected an amendment that would have stripped state constitutional protections for abortion by an 18-point margin. And the following November, voters in deeply conservative Kentucky narrowly rejected a state constitutional amendment that said there is no right to an abortion in the Bluegrass State.
