CNN —Costco is recalling smoked salmon products over possible listeria contamination. There have been at least 10 reported deaths and 59 hospitalizations across 19 states due to the listeria outbreak, according to the CDC. In October, there have multiple instances of recalls like Costco’s salmon products due to potential listeria contamination, according to the FDA, which tracks public announcements. While the recalls come on the heels of the Boar’s Head listeria outbreak and McDonald’s E. coli outbreak, experts told CNN that an increase in recalls over potential contamination isn’t necessarily cause for concern. On October 24, the FDA announced a recall of chicken taco kits produced by Sprouts Farmers Markets over potential listeria contamination.

CNN —An E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has led to at least 49 illnesses across 10 states, including one death. Diced onions and other types of beef patties used at McDonald’s have not been implicated in this outbreak, the FDA said. E. coli infections can be seriousEscherichia coli, or E. coli, is a common bacteria, but certain types can make you sick. People with E. coli infections may have symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. A few illnesses, including E. coli infections, are well above federal targets for reducing foodborne illness.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can contaminate food and cause serious complications for certain groups of individuals. Even though cooking the meat kills any listeria that may be present, deli meat can be contaminated afterward during packaging or slicing. Similarly, the ready-to-eat meat products involved in the ongoing BrucePac recall are precooked, although the source of contamination hasn’t yet been determined. Listeria infection early in pregnancy can cause premature labor, a baby with a low birth weight and loss of the pregnancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 1,600 people are infected and 260 people die from listeria infection in the United States every year.
