A group of more than a dozen Republican lawmakers is urging a collegiate athletic conference to ban transgender women from competition after reports of a trans student competing on the s women’s volleyball team of a participating university. “Under these guidelines, it is only fair that biological males play men’s sports and biological females play women’s sports.”“Clearly, the Mountain West Conference has dropped the ball,” it continues. In September, SJSU volleyball player Brooke Slusser joined a lawsuit filed by more than a dozen women athletes against the NCAA, which oversees collegiate athletics, about trans athletes’ participation in school sports. CNN —A US soldier who was critically injured over the summer while on the temporary Gaza pier mission died last week, the Army said Monday. Quandarius Davon Stanley, was one of three US service members injured in non-combat incidents during the mission, though two were immediately returned to duty after suffering minor injuries. “Stanley was injured while supporting the mission that delivered humanitarian aid to Gaza in May 2024 and was receiving treatment in long-term care medical center,” Capt. Karla Jay wears a "Lavender Menace" T-shirt under her blouse at the Second Congress to Unite Women in New York in 1970. Also in attendance was Lavender Menace protester Martha Shelley, now 80 years old, who danced to the jukebox. An early and influential participant in the gay liberation movement, Shelley spoke on the second night of the June 1969 rebellion. I’m still marching, but I want them to pick up their own torches and march up the street, as well.”Friedan eventually apologized for her use of the phrase “lavender menace,” but not until 1977.

A California judge on Tuesday sentenced David DePape, the man who broke into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and attacked her husband with a hammer, to life behind bars without the possibility of parole. DePape had previously been sentenced to 30 years in prison for federal crimes connected to the Oct. 28, 2022, attack in the upscale Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said DePape is "now being held accountable" for acts that are a "danger to democracy." "Mr. DePape has been convicted of crimes both federally and locally reflecting the public's unanimous condemnation," Jenkins said in statement after Tuesday's sentencing. "Recognizing the seriousness of his crimes and the danger to democracy that Mr. DePape posed he is now being held accountable and will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole."

Hundreds of veterans who were dismissed from the U.S. military under the now-repealed “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy have been given honorable discharges following a yearlong review, the Pentagon announced Tuesday. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” was in effect from February 1994 to September 2011 and resulted in the discharge of more than 13,000 service members. “What this means is that of the nearly 13,500 individuals who were administratively separated under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, and served long enough to receive a merit-based characterization of service, 96% now have an honorable discharge,” Austin said in the statement. Gays and lesbians dismissed from the military during the “don’t ask, don’t tell” era are part of a legacy that started well before 1994. Historians estimate at least 100,000 service members were forced out of the military due to their actual or perceived sexuality between World War II and 2011.
