Claudia Sheinbaum is officially taking office Tuesday morning as Mexico's first female president and the first of Jewish heritage. Sheinbaum is expected to head later to the National Palace in Mexico City's famed Zócalo to deliver a speech to constituents. López Obrador leaves office with an approval rating of nearly 80%, Noticias Telemundo reported. Still, crime rates remained high during López Obrador’s term, with at least 199,300 homicides and 51,700 persons reported missing from December 2018 to August of this year, Noticias Telemundo reported. Mexican government data has also shown that the strategy of López Obrador’s predecessors — pursuing drug lords in an all-out war — did not improve safety, either.

Former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum speaks after being named presidential candidate of the ruling Morena party for next year's presidential election in Mexico City on September 6, 2023. Voters in Mexico are participating in the country's largest election ever — casting votes Sunday to fill more than 20,000 local, state and federal positions and almost certainly elect their first female president. But rampant violence has marred the road toward one of the most consequential elections in Mexico's history. Violence against political figures has also persisted throughout this election cycle, resulting in a 150% increase in the number of victims of political violence since 2021, according to an analysis from Integralia, a public affairs consulting firm that researches political risk and other issues in Mexico. These have greatly dismayed Mexican voters, leading most of them to cite security as a top issue of concern.

The war is approaching the end of its second year, and Ukraine’s military needs more manpower to sustain a bloody war of attrition against Russia, a country with more than three times the population of Ukraine. In a recent essay, Ukraine’s top military commander, Valery Zaluzhny acknowledged that training and recruiting troops was becoming a serious challenge. The essay acknowledged a bleak reality: Ukraine needs more people in uniform, and it needs them now. Ukraine fills its ranks with volunteers but also has a system of conscription that allows the state to draft men of military age. If the war continues with the same intensity as it is today, there is no way to avoid conscription.

So part of the way Trump tries to break our system is to redefine the qualities of a leader — at least in the G.O.P. And when that is your definition of winning, people of character like McCain, Cheney and Romney are in your way. You need to strip everyone around you of character, and make everything about securing power and money. That is why so many people who entered Trump’s orbit since 2015 have walked away muddied. His family members and party colleagues have grown adept at running away from reporters’ microphones after every Trump outrage.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has scaled back his ambitions in Ukraine, US intel says. Russia has suffered serious setbacks in its bid to seize control of Ukraine. But Ukrainian forces repelled the Russian military in the Kyiv region, then pushed them back along a broad front of territory they had seized in southern and eastern Ukraine. Despite the setbacks, last June Haines said Putin still believed that seizing control of most of Ukraine was possible. Putin may believe that a ceasefire would be to his advantage as a way of prolonging the conflict, and eroding Western support for Ukraine, said Haines.
Russia's forces in Ukraine will be "exhausted" soon, said a former senior NATO leader. Ukraine is seeking to push back Russian forces along a broad front in east Ukraine. In an interview with New York radio station WABC 770, Stavridis said that while Ukraine was winning on the ground, Russia had an advantage in the air. "I don't see either side having a breakthrough moment — at least this winter," Stavridis told WABC host John Catsimatidis. Ukrainian and Russian forces are fighting along an approximately 600 mile front, with Ukraine forcing Russia into defensive positions in the south and northeast, while Russian forces are seeking to advance around the eastern city of Bakhmut.
Lula is assuming office for the third time after thwarting far-right incumbent Bolsonaro’s reelection bid. Many have gathered outside military barracks since, questioning results and pleading with the armed forces to prevent Lula from taking office. Furthermore, Santoro said, the credibility of Lula and his Workers’ Party were assailed by a sprawling corruption investigation. He had been camped outside Brasilia’s army headquarters with hundreds of other Bolsonaro supporters since Nov. 12. Instead of Bolsonaro, a group representing diverse segments of society performed the role of presenting Lula with the presidential sash to Lula atop the ramp of the presidential palace.
