AdvertisementKelly Green, 34, went to visit her parents in Tristan Da Cunha and fell in love. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kelly Green, the head of tourism at Tristan Da Cunha. But I misunderstood, as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is a settlement in Tristan Da Cunha, one of the world's most isolated settlements with only around 236 inhabitants. I wanted to live in Tristan Da Cunha. Just because I decided to live on Tristan Da Cunha doesn't mean they have to live here forever.

Advocacy group Tax Justice Network has ranked the British Virgin Islands, followed by the Cayman Islands and Bermuda as "most complicit" in helping corporations underpay corporate income tax. Traffic_analyzer | Digitalvision Vectors | Getty ImagesBritish overseas territories are the world's top enablers of corporate tax abuse, according to a ranking by tax advocacy group Tax Justice Network. The British Virgin Islands is the territory "most complicit" in helping multinational corporations underpay corporate income tax, followed by the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, according to the latest update to TJN's Corporate Tax Haven Index earlier this month. TJN estimates that the UK and its British tax havens cost other countries an estimated $84 billion in corporate taxes annually. Defending themselves against the charges made by the advocacy group, spokespersons from some of the governments said they were in full compliance with international tax standards set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

President Joe Biden welcomed the deal, saying it would secure the effective operation of Diego Garcia, a strategically important air base in the Indian Ocean, into the next century. But critics in Britain said it was a capitulation that played into the hands of China, which has close trade ties with Mauritius. Britain, which has controlled the region since 1814, detached the Chagos Islands in 1965 from Mauritius — a former colony that became independent three years later — to create the British Indian Ocean Territory. The new agreement said Mauritius would be free to implement a program of resettlement on the islands other than Diego Garcia, with the terms left for Port Louis to decide. David Blagden, associate professor of international security and strategy at Britain’s University of Exeter, said the deal was a “big win” for Mauritius.

CNN —The first cases of bird flu have been detected in seabirds in the Antarctic, according to the British Antarctic Survey, raising fears the disease will spread rapidly through dense colonies of birds and mammals. “Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in brown skua populations on Bird Island, South Georgia – the first known cases in the Antarctic region,” the British Antarctic Survey said in a statement Monday. South Georgia is part of the British overseas territory east of South America’s tip and just above Antarctica’s main landmass. The British Antarctic Survey believes the birds carried the disease on their return from migration to South America. The British Antarctic Survey, which is responsible for the UK’s national scientific activities in Antarctica, operates two research stations on South Georgia, including one at Bird Island where the confirmed cases were identified.

SubCom’s loyalty is especially important because it is the only major U.S. subsea cable company. Rather, they carefully obscured the U.S. military component within a larger private-sector cable project, according to four subsea cable industry sources with knowledge of the arrangement. That project, known as the Oman Australia Cable, was spearheaded by SUBCO, a Brisbane-based subsea cable investment company owned by Australian entrepreneur Bevan Slattery. June 19 (Reuters) - Silicon Valley Bank's customers in Asia whose deposits were recently seized by the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) are under pressure to repay loans to First Citizens Bank, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. According to the report, when SVB failed in March, the FDIC stepped in to protect all of the California bank's U.S. deposits and arranged a sale of the lender's U.S. customer accounts, branches and loans to First Citizens Bancshares. SVB, FDIC and First Citizens Bank did not immediately respond to a request for comment. California regulators shuttered Silicon Valley Bank in March and First Citizens BancShares (FCNCA.O) purchased the bank with the help of FDIC in a deal that drained $20 billion from an insurance fund financed by banks and run by the government. But whatever your feelings toward Elizabeth, it’s clear that the institution of the British monarchy is far from benevolent. Meanwhile, the exact worth of the British monarchy is very difficult to calculate. The Sunday Times' Rich List calculated the queen’s personal net worth as 370 million pounds (more than $420 million), while the author and royal expert David McClure estimated it at 400 million pounds (around $460 million). In 2021-2022, the royal household’s financial report calculated this as 86.3 million pounds ($98.5 million). (According to the BBC, this portfolio generates around 20 million pounds a year in profits.)
