America is obsessed with Chili’s

New York CNN —People apparently can’t get enough of the Big Smasher burger, $6 margaritas and Triple Dipper combination platters at Chili’s. The meal deal is now 11% of Chili’s business, with sales soaring 70% over the last year. The Triple Dipper is “very relevant with younger guests and how they prefer to eat with more variety, customization and experiential flavors through our wide variety of dips,” Hochman said. The Triple Dipper is a staple on TikTok, with customers filming their combinations and raving about it. Meanwhile, McDonald’s was seeing its fortunes recover because of the $5 meal deal, but its momentum was stunted because of an E. coli outbreak.

Here's why Americans are going back to Chili's

"Our marketing team has done a great job of getting back into what we call the zeitgeist or being relevant again," Kevin Hochman, CEO of Chili's parent Brinker International , told CNBC. A viral social media presence and a push toward value-oriented advertising have propelled sales growth every quarter of fiscal 2024. The brand grew rapidly in the early 2000s, but in the decade that followed the Great Recession, Chili's U.S. locations declined and sales growth flattened. It made Chili's fun again," said Joe Wilson, managing partner of a Chili's in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Watch the video to learn more about how Chili's made a comeback.

But these days, other fast-food chains have revived the $5 price point, hoping to win over customers who have cut back their spending. Sensing diners' fast-food backlash, players such as Brinker International's Chili's have used their marketing to highlight their own value relative to the cost of a fast-food meal. Shares of McDonald's, Burger King parent Restaurant Brands International and Wendy's have all slid by double digits this year. Taco Bell owner Yum Brands is down more than 1% in 2024. The Beastie Boys sued Chili’s Grill & Bar in federal court on Wednesday, accusing the restaurant chain’s main operator of infringing on their copyright of the 1994 hit “Sabotage” by using it in advertisements without permission. According to the complaint, Brinker International, which operates more than 1,600 Chili’s and other restaurants worldwide, rolled out promotional videos on social media beginning in November 2022 that used significant portions of the song and parodied its music video, directed by Spike Jonze. The music video playfully pays homage to 1970s television crime dramas and features a fictitious opening credit scene and the group’s members dressed in fake wigs, mustaches and sunglasses of the era. In the Chili’s video advertisement, three characters dressed in similar ’70s attire rob ingredients from a Chili’s restaurant scored to the sound of “Sabotage,” said the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Casual-dining chains are gaining customers who have grown frustrated with higher fast-food prices, Darden Restaurants CEO Rick Cardenas said on Thursday. Chili's rolled out an ad campaign that calls out the Big Mac and other fast-food burgers for their prices. Dine Brands CEO John Peyton told CNBC in May that Applebee's has been leaning into deals to win over fast-food diners. The overall consumer price index rose 3.3% in that period. In particular, McDonald's has faced backlash from customers, social media users and even House Republicans for its higher prices.

For them, and the fast food chains they’re now competing against, the stakes are high. “Fast food has gotten really expensive,” Henkes said. On X, Chili’s asked whether Chili’s is better than fast food, and promised rewards to those who said yes. Chili’s also ran video ads comparing its food favorably to fast food burgers. “People go to sit-down restaurants, generally speaking, for different occasions, than they go to fast food restaurants,” he noted.

Applebee's and IHOP owner Dine Brands thinks its deals can lure away fast-food customers who have grown frustrated with menu prices. The company reported first-quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street's estimates, and both Applebee's and IHOP's same-store sales shrank more than expected. As Applebee's leans into value with a slate of promotions that includes the return of Dollaritas, Dine Brands CEO John Peyton is confident that the chain can beat out the fast-food chains vying for its customers. Applebee's isn't the only casual-dining chain taking aim at McDonald's and the rest of the fast-food category. "It's top of mind for so many people, and it's because they've grown up with Applebee's," Peyton said.

Ghost kitchens are restaurants with no storefront and no seating that customers never see and which only do delivery. Several influencers and celebrities have used ghost kitchens to produce their own lines of food, like YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known online as Mr. AdvertisementAnd as quality issues and late delivery times worsen, some ghost kitchens are starting to see legal challenges. Cracker Barrel also opened its own virtual restaurant using CloudKitchens, another ghost kitchen group, according to Restaurant Business. The company owns three virtual brands, Banda Burrito, The Meltdown, and Burger Den.

The jingle, last used in the mid-2000s, became an earworm for anyone watching TV during the ’90s when it seemingly blanketed the airwaves nonstop. Chili’s is hoping that nostalgia will draw renewed interest in the restaurant chain that’s in the midst of a turnaround. The new TV ad, featuring Boyz II Men singing a modernized version of the jingle, will also be promoted on social media this month. “It feels natural for us to rerelease the ‘Baby Back Ribs’ jingle and pay homage to Chili’s legendary menu item in a nostalgic way,” the group said in a release. The latest version is the “biggest rerelease of Chili’s iconic earworm yet and doesn’t stray too far from the original version,” the chain said.
