AdvertisementThe closure of a Kmart store in Bridgehampton, New York, in October marked the end of an era for the iconic chain. Now, just one Kmart store remains in the mainland US, tucked away inside an At Home store in southwest Miami. "We see this in things such as Kmart hacks," where creators showcase how they use Kmart products in novel ways to help in their everyday lives, Lloyd-Wallis said. A race to the bottomSo far, Kmart Australia has weathered the e-commerce storm, in part thanks to the geographical challenges companies like Amazon face in Australia. It seems, then, that Kmart Australia could find itself in a price race to the bottom.

The demise of a former trendsetterThe Bridgehampton store opened in 1999, taking the place of a former regional discount store, Caldor. When the retailer emerged from bankruptcy it still had 231 Sears and 191 Kmart stores, but those were also almost all doomed. New York CNN —Kmart, once one of America’s leading discount retailers, is closing its last full-size store in the mainland United States. It also has stores in Guam and the US Virgin Islands, where it does not face competition from more successful big box stores. At the time of the 2005 merger Kmart had about 1,400 stores and Sears nearly 900 full-line US stores. Today only a handful of Sears stores remain, although it has outlets thatoperate under the Sears Hometown brands. The chain grew rapidly for several decades, claiming the discount segment of the market that big box stores now dominate.

Big spenders laying down the six figures to secure a suite are companies mostly from financial, insurance and legal businesses. The Aug. 2 dinner at the Bridgehampton, N.Y., home of Howard Lutnick, the Cantor Fitzgerald chief executive, was a high-powered affair. Among the roughly 130 people who dined under an air-conditioned tent were some of Donald Trump’s wealthiest supporters, including the billionaire hedge-fund financier Bill Ackman, who sat next to the former president, and Omeed Malik, the president of another fund, 1789 Capital. Some guests hoped Mr. Trump would signal that he was recalibrating after a series of damaging mistakes. He did not. According to two people present, Mr. Trump himself also brought up his remark, made two days earlier at a gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists, in which he had questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

Blade, the helicopter charter company, was founded 10 years ago as a way for commuters going between New York and the Hamptons to avoid vehicle traffic. This May it is introducing a new service, the Hamptons Streamliner, that, starting at $195 a ticket, will take passengers to destinations on eastern Long Island aboard … a bus. Like Blade’s helicopters, seats on which start at $1,025, its buses are marketed as a luxurious option for Hamptons-goers. Seats can recline up to 45 degrees and passengers will be offered free refreshments like espresso martinis, PopUp Bagels and Sweetgreen salads as they make their way from Manhattan to stops in Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton via the Long Island Expressway.

Ina Garten doesn't just love Beatty's Chocolate Cake. She said it's "the most fabulous chocolate cake that I've ever made." Garten learned of Beatty's Chocolate Cake from a good friend. "He actually served this cake to me once at dinner and I just begged him for the recipe," Garten said on an episode featuring the cake. Monte Mathews, a friend of Grimm's, shared the story behind the famous cake on his blog Chewing The Fat.

“Everybody back up!” someone called to a crowd of people surrounding the model and actress Christie Brinkley, who was standing near a neatly trimmed lawn on a sunny and hot Saturday afternoon. Ms. Brinkley had just arrived at Polo Hamptons, an annual cocktail party and polo match held over two weekends in July on the sprawling, private Fishel estate in Bridgehampton, N.Y.“I’ve always gone to polo throughout my time out here because it is so East Coast,” said Ms. Brinkley, 69, as she sipped from a small bottle of rosé from Bellissima, her wine label, which people were also drinking nearby. “And there are usually some cute polo players.”The event on Saturday, which drew more than 900 people, was organized by Social Life magazine, a lifestyle publication based in the Hamptons that was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The afternoon attracted a crowd that included Jean Shafiroff, the philanthropist, Lizzie Asher, the president of Macchu Pisco, a spirits company, and Maria and Kenneth Fishel, who own the estate.

It may seem counterintuitive, but the pandemic was like a brief visit to Shangri-La for Wall Street. For the first time in years, Wall Street has to sing for its supper. A return to the office also means a return to more-classic Wall Street social norms. Wall Street, for all its highfalutin personalities and big paydays, is an apprenticeship system. For Wall Street, the heart of the pandemic was a moment to consider what life would be like at a slower, more-nurturing pace.

An oversupply of summer rentals in the Hamptons is spurring price cuts of 20% or more, as affluent Wall Streeters and tech workers cut back on their summer spending. Wall Street bonuses fell 26% last and several of the large Wall Street firms and banks, including Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Bank of America and Lazard, have announced job cuts. "The Hamptons is tied to Wall Street with an umbilical cord," Desiderio said. "When Wall Street is doing well, we do well. The one bright spot in the rental market, at least for owners, is at the very high end, especially oceanfront.
The average price for a house in the Hamptons hit a record $3 million in the first quarter, highlighting a shortage of trophy beach homes for sale and the resilience of wealthy buyers. The average sales price in the New York beach community jumped 18% in the first quarter to $3.1 million, according to a report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel. The average price in the Hamptons is now more than $1 million higher than the average sales price in Manhattan. The high end of the Hamptons market is the strongest. In the luxury market — representing the top 10% of sales — both the median and average sales price broke records during the first quarter, with the average luxury price surging 33% to $16.1 million, according to Jonathan Miller, CEO of Miller Samuel.
IT’S EASY TO SEE why Isaac Mizrahi’s Instagram feed is everyone’s favorite cooking show right now. The renowned fashion designer/actor/singer/producer’s videos, shot in his Bridgehampton, N.Y., and Manhattan kitchens, showcase his warm personality as well as his sporadic screw-ups. “This is exactly how cooking shows should be!” one commenter gushed. “They are always too perfect and intimidating!”On any given “episode” of his highly entertaining one-man show, Mr. Mizrahi (@imisaacmizrahi) might welcome his “darlings” to cook along, or to peek inside his drawer full of ice cream scoops, or to compose a cocktail along with him while he watches “Jeopardy!”
Suddenly, in the midst of discussing what Cohen should wear to the next LoveShackFancy store opening, there was the sound of glass clanging. (Another person confirmed hearing this exchange, though the person close to the company said multiple Zoom attendees did not recall it.) The person close to the company said, "It is not uncommon for trips to have dual purposes — they always generate content." Another time, during a visit to the Palm Beach store, Cohen freaked out after seeing staffers in sweatshirts and sneakers. "As with most contemporary fashion brands, we currently do not operate in the plus-size business," the person close to LoveShackFancy said.
