CNN —In late August, a container vessel sailed out of Angola’s Port of Lobito carrying railway operator Lobito Atlantic Railway’s first shipment of copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the US. That’s about 30 days faster than a road journey, according to Francisco Franca, the CEO of Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR), a consortium of firms that took over operations of the railway in January. The ship took Lobito Atlantic Railways first shipment of copper to the US. “Lobito Corridor is not just a railway line, but is the economic development along the corridor,” said Franca, the CEO of LAR. For companies like his, the benefits of the Lobito Corridor are clear.

Such scrutiny is the product of diet culture, the influences and messages that affect how we eat, based on cultural pressure to attain an ideal body type, experts say. And with increasing changes in access to food, exercise and health care, people’s weight is becoming more out of their individual control, she added. A 2019 meta-analysis showed that more than 80% of weight loss is regained after five years. One idea is that diet culture keeps a check on power. Comments and criticisms you make about other people’s bodies also influence the way you feel about your own body, Conason said.

The crowd condemned long-time Venezuelan socialist president Nicolas Maduro after he said he beat opponent Edmundo González Urrutia in Sunday’s election. “It’s really, really, really a congregation that we see all around the world that we showed to the world that it was a fraud and Venezuela deserved freedom,” said Gabriel Duque. Many are hopeful their voices will be heard and they can go back to their home country again soon. If you ask a regular Venezuelan, he’s going to tell you that he wants Maduro to leave because we want to go back to our country. And as soon as we remove Nicolás Maduro, you’re going to see, you’re going to witness all Venezuelans going back to our country because we never want to left,” Morin said.

Comfort and connectionIn addition to all the messages about what people should look like, the physical sensations of summer often bring increased attention to people’s bodies, Campos said. For a better relationship with your body this summer, Campos recommends finding ways to connect with yourself in more enjoyable ways. “That is a connected moment where I can say, ‘This feels good in my body,’” Campos said. “When somebody’s having a hard body image day … I want them to check in about what else is going on,” she said. “You might feel better, but it doesn’t actually change anything in your body.

Accidental memedom is very different from social media stars who can make their (sometimes lucrative) living by grinding out content for years and studying platform mechanics. U.K. stocks are finally turning a corner after years of underperformance, according to one chief investment officer, who stressed that valuations are looking "very cheap." The U.K. FTSE 100 is up around 11% over the last three months, while the broader FTSE 250 index is more than 9% higher. In comparison, the U.S.' S&P 500 is trading around 6% higher over the same period. He gave the example of oil giant Shell trading at a significantly lower price-to-earnings multiple than its U.S. rivals. A low P/E multiple — the ratio of a company's share price to its earnings per share — can indicate that a stock is undervalued.

Some single parents with disabilities said being able to take days off has helped them stay healthier and avoid burnout. This means that a higher percentage of single parents' earnings goes toward childcare costs, pushing some away from using childcare entirely. Mike Segar | ReutersMarkets need to begin thinking about the structural impact of Donald Trump's proposed 10% tariff increase, which "shakes up every asset class," according to Michael Every, global strategist at Rabobank. He suggested one of investors' top concerns would be the 10% tariff on all U.S. imports. Trump floated the 10% tariff during an interview last year with Fox Business' Larry Kudlow, his former White House economic advisor, saying "it's a massive amount of money." China responded with its own tariffs on U.S. goods, and Trump also imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from most countries, including many of Washington's biggest allies. He noted Trump's tendency to "change his mind" so frequently on geopolitical issues that "people won't know where his thinking is at."

Vietnam has already rail connections to China, but the system is old with limited capacity on the Vietnam side. The upgraded railway would pass through the region where Vietnam has its largest deposits of rare earths, of which China is by far the world's biggest refiner. Chinese and Vietnamese rare earths industry experts discussed last week stronger cooperation on processing the minerals, according to Vietnamese state media. It is unclear how much China would contribute to the upgraded railway track in Vietnam and whether Hanoi would accept sizeable financing from Beijing on this. A strengthened railway link could also boost Vietnam's export to China, mostly of agriculture products, boost Chinese tourism to northern Vietnam and further integrate the two countries' manufacturing industries, which experts already consider as symbiotic, with factories in Vietnam largely assembling components produced in China.

An alarming debt crisis has unfolded in Laos in recent years, raising worries about the tiny nation's obligation to its biggest creditor — China. China became the largest foreign investor in Laos in late 2013 and since then, its influence has only continued to skyrocket. Laos borrowed billions from President Xi Jinping's government to finance railways, highways and hydroelectric dams, depleting its foreign reserves in the process. It's widely feared the country may be on the brink of economic collapse if the economic crisis spins out of control. But without a clear-cut debt reduction deal with China, Laos' financial hardships will not likely ease, analysts warn.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The U.S. announced a $553- million project Wednesday to build a new, deep-water shipping container terminal in the Port of Colombo as it competes with China in international development financing. The U.S.-backed financing comes at a time when Sri Lanka is struggling to recover from a dire financial and economic crisis. Sri Lanka borrowed heavily from China to build the port and other infrastructure including an airport and a city being built on reclaimed land. Both neighboring India and China are jostling for influence in Sri Lanka and both have already invested in expanding facilities at the Colombo port. Colombo port also has a terminal run by China Merchants Port Holdings.

The EU's Global Gateway is designed to invest 300 billion euros, half of it in Africa, from 2021 to 2027. The projects are in areas such as energy, transport, education and research, along with partnerships to help the European Union secure minerals critical for its green transition and reduce reliance on China. Partnerships sealed during the two-day forum included one with Mauritania on green hydrogen and with Uzbekistan and Zambia on critical raw materials. The Global Gateway Forum came a week after China hosted a 10th anniversary celebration of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), where $97.2 billion worth of projects were signed. EU officials say the Global Gateway ensures local communities benefit from infrastructure projects and promotes high social and environmental standards.
