The brewer plans to use the latest investment to increase production capacity and expand its offerings at global retailers to meet rising consumer demand for non-alcoholic beer. Leading non-alcoholic brewer Athletic Brewing Company announced Tuesday it's raised an additional $50 million in equity financing in a round led by General Atlantic. Athletic Brewing launched its non-alcoholic craft brewing facilities in 2018 and has since grown to become the 10th largest U.S. craft brewery and 20th largest overall U.S. brewing company, despite only offering non-alcoholic options, according to rankings by the Brewers Association. Athletic holds over 19% market share within non-alcoholic beer and is driving 32% of total non-alcoholic beer category growth, according to NielsenIQ data. Established beer companies like Heineken , Constellation Brands -owned Corona, Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser and even Diageo's Guinness have also hopped on the trend, introducing non-alcoholic beer offerings of their own.

1 beer in America due to a competitor's moves is not accurate," said Jim Sabia, executive vice president and managing director of Constellation Brands ' beer division. Bud Light's sales slump changed that. The data shows that on the four weeks ended on May 20, Modelo's share of total beer sales grew to 10.7%, while Bud Light's fell to 9.6%. "Modelo has been on a rise and Bud Light's been on a decline as we've seen overall shifts in the beer market in the last 10 years." But when it comes to success in the Mexican beer market, Constellation is relatively untouchable.

New York CNN —Anchor Brewing, which has been America’s oldest craft brewer with 127 years in business, closed its taprooms for good on Sunday. There’s hope that could happen: Roughly two dozen different investors as well as a group of Anchor’s employees have “expressed interest in buying all or parts of Anchor Brewing,” company spokesman Sam Singer told CNN. Anchor got its start in 1896 in San Francisco, becoming the nation’s first-ever craft brewery. Under Sapporo’s ownership, production of Anchor’s beer declined every year except in 2021, according to the Brewers Association. Brewbound, a beer industry website, previously reported that Sapporo’s recent purchase of craft brewer Stone Brewing sparked concerns among Anchor’s employees of how their brewery fit into plans.

More beers in America are being paired with lime than ever before. The story of how Modelo Especial, a Mexican lager, surpassed Bud Light as the top-selling beer in America predates the conservative backlash that Bud Light faced in April over a collaboration with a transgender influencer. Rather, the factors that, for the better part of a decade, put Modelo on its triumphant track include an increasing preference among American consumers for imported, more expensive beer; a decade-old antitrust deal; and effective marketing campaigns aimed at attracting young, non-Hispanic consumers to the Mexican beer. “Most people in the beer industry have assumed Modelo was going to overtake Bud Light at some point,” said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, a trade group representing over 6,000 American breweries. “It was a question of when, not if.”The switch occurred at the start of June, after Bud Light had held the No.

Person's hand holding bottle of California Lager from Anchor Brewing Company, maker of Anchor Steam Beer, Lafayette, California, July 12, 2023. A spokesperson for the Brewers Association, which represents more than 5,400 brewers, distributors and craft beer retailers, said the trade group doesn't normally, by policy, comment on the opening or closing of any beer company. But the impending closure of Anchor Brewing — an iconic San Francisco staple as famous as sourdough bread, Ghirardelli Chocolate or Rice-A-Roni — prompted it to offer a heartfelt eulogy. "Anchor's contributions to craft brewing and American beer history cannot be overstated," chief economist Bart Watson said in a statement. Anchor Brewing was purchased in 2017 by Sapporo U.S.A. A representative for the company couldn't immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

New York CNN —Pour one out for Anchor Brewing: America’s oldest craft brewer is shutting down after 127 years in business. Another problem has been Sapporo, the Japanese beer company that bought the brand in 2017. “This was an extremely difficult decision that Anchor reached only after many months of careful evaluation,” said Anchor Brewing spokesperson Sam Singer. “This is a sad day in the history of craft brewing in America,” Harry Schuhmacher, Craft Business Daily’s publisher told CNN. He literally nurtured that brewery from insolvency in the 60s to becoming San Francisco’s hometown beer and symbolic of America’s craft beer resurgence.”

In 1994, Leah Wong Ashburn’s father, Oscar, did something very few, if any, Chinese Americans had tried before: He opened a craft brewery. Mr. Wong, who immigrated to the United States from Jamaica in the 1960s, had retired to Asheville, N.C., after a long and successful career running an engineering firm. Beer wasn’t on his mind until a friend and local brewer proposed starting their own operation — the city’s first since Prohibition. “There weren’t very many of us around back then.”Though demographics in the craft beer industry have slowly shifted since Highland opened its doors nearly 30 years ago, it is still a world dominated by white owners. According to data from the Brewers Association, only 2 percent of breweries in the United States are owned by Asian Americans like the Wongs.

Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev SA has scored at least a temporary win in the long-running battle over light beer brands’ marketing claims. BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division, an ad-industry self-regulatory group, determined that Molson Coors Beverage Co. should stop marketing its light beer products by implying that those produced by rivals have little or no flavor. Molson Coors plans to appeal, according to Chief Communications Officer Adam Collins. A final decision in the Molson Coors case should come down next month, she said. In 2019, Molson Coors sued AB InBev over a Super Bowl campaign highlighting the fact that Miller Lite and Coors Light use corn syrup in the brewing process.
REUTERS/Phil NobleJan 10 (Reuters) - New Zealand supplies of carbon dioxide (CO2), used to fizz drinks and in packaging and hospitals, are having to be rationed because of shortages following the closure of the country's only food-grade CO2 production facility. "We are working collaboratively with suppliers, customers and other industry stakeholders to manage the CO2 supply situation," it added. The rationing is the result of the shut down of a CO2 production facility on west coast of the North Island. To try to fill that gap, CO2 imports almost tripled last year, according to Statistics New Zealand data. The long-building craft-beer boom is showing signs of slowing down. Craft beer’s popularity has risen nationwide for more than a decade, and breweries have become a calling card for up-and-coming neighborhoods and communities, giving residents and visitors new places to gather and enjoy a taste of their towns. But in 2023 the smallest number of new breweries in over a decade will open, the Colorado-based trade group Brewers Association predicts.
REUTERS/Issei KatoTOKYO, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Kirin Holdings (2503.T), Japan's second-largest brewer, is looking to buy factory facilities in North America to maintain strong growth in the region's craft beer market, its chief executive said. Kirin has seen sales volumes in the North American craft beer market climb by double-digit percentage figures since acquiring Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing in 2019 and Bell's Brewery in Michigan in 2021. "Our craft beer business in North America is on a roll," CEO Yoshinori Isozaki said in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday. North American craft beer is also now the company's most profitable segment among global businesses that span everything from whisky to probiotic health drinks, he added, without disclosing profit margins. Kirin had craft beer sales of about 60 billion yen ($454 million) in the year ended in March, accounting for 3% of global sales.
The investment gives Keurig a minority position in the beverage startup, which controls over half of the $328.6 million nonalcoholic-beer market. He quit his position at Point72 Asset Management in 2017 and cofounded Athletic Brewing a year later with the head brewer John Walker. Athletic Brewing now controls 45% of the non-alcoholic craft beer market. Athletic Brewing said it distinguishes itself from big beer brewers by being the only brewery in the country dedicated solely to nonalcoholic craft beer. The restaurateur Danny Meyer and Chang serve Athletic Brewing in Eleven Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern, The Modern, and Momofuku Ko.
Jim Koch founded the Boston Beer Company, the maker of Samuel Adams, in 1984. The bottle is a Samuel Adams, a mainstay on shelves alongside American beer brands like Budweiser and Miller. The Boston Beer Company, which he founded in 1984, now owns Angry Orchard, Truly Hard Seltzer, and Twisted Tea. The billionaire founder and brewmaster said the strategies that made him successful 38 years ago are the same ones that continue to improve Samuel Adams beer today. "In my mind, there is a perfect Sam Adams Boston Lager.
