Alphabet spikes after Google announces 'breakthrough' quantum chip Shares of Google's parent company Alphabet rose 6% on Tuesday, a day after the company hailed its latest quantum computing chip as a "breakthrough." Quantum computing uses quantum bits or qubits which can be zero, one or something in between. Will we see faster laptops, faster smartphones, or can quantum computing be used for artificial intelligence applications? Proponents of quantum computing claim it will be able to solve problems that current computers can't. After all, if there are currently no real world uses for quantum computing, the solution cannot be put to solving problems, let alone commercialized.

Google's new Willow chip may not show up in consumer products in the near future — however, quantum computing researchers say it represents a significant breakthrough in the field. The challenge is reducing the amount of errors quantum computers generate while operating. AdvertisementUnlike your laptop, which uses bits to process information, quantum computers use something called qubits, short for quantum bits. Brierley compared Google's quantum computing advancement to what mobile networks experienced when they shifted from 1G to 2G networks. Sebastian Weidt, quantum computer professor at the University of Sussex and co-founder and CEO of quantum computing company Universal Quantum, told BI that "we're still a little while away" from quantum computing impacting the general public.

For the previous study, the team measured the amount of manganese antioxidants in the cells of the bacteria. The researchers found that the amount of radiation that a microorganism could survive was directly related to its amount of manganese antioxidants. So the more manganese antioxidants present, the more resistance to radiation. This antioxidant has been used in radiation-inactivated polyvalent vaccines, which rely on radiation to shut down pathogens like chlamydia. The study team analyzed how MDP’s active components, including manganese, phosphate and a peptide called DP1, protect cells and proteins from radiation exposure.

Investors looking for the next big technology trend may want to keep an eye on quantum computing stocks. A qubit, or quantum bit, is a unit used to encode data in such computers. The breakthrough from Google lifted other quantum computing stocks , including little-known contender Rigetti Computing . Quantum computing is no new phenomenon, but it is gaining importance as larger and larger swaths of data are processed to train large language models. EMJ Capital's Eric Jackson called it the "next big theme" in a post on social media platform X, saying that he's long Rigetti Computing and sees a "big opportunity" ahead for the company.

Alphabet shares rose 5% during trading on Tuesday, the day after the company hailed its latest quantum computing chip as a "breakthrough." The Google parent company on Monday revealed "Willow," a quantum computing chip that the company said performed significantly better on a quantum computing benchmark than its predecessor did in 2019. Willow is the second milestone in a six-step strategy to develop quantum computers that can perform useful applications, Google said. When quantum computing matures, it is expected to be useful for large-scale simulations and code breaking, but that may not be possible for years or decades. Google isn't the only tech giant working on quantum computing.

Bitcoin could see another couple weeks of stagnation as recent gains are absorbed before resuming its uptrend, according to Fairlead Strategies. "After failing to hold above $100,000, bitcoin is confirming a short-term counter-trend 'sell' signal ... [which] supports two more weeks of consolidation." With resistance at $100,000, Fairlead puts bitcoin support at about $84,700, or its 50-day moving average. While bitcoin should outperform near-term, ether is now better positioned to outperform in the intermediate term, she added. Ether still positive Ari Wald, chart analyst at Oppenheimer, noted that ether hasn't rallied to a new multi-year high the way bitcoin has, "indicating ETH has been relatively weaker."

Generative artificial intelligence probably won't change your life in 2025 — at least, not more than it already has, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. When OpenAI launched ChatGPT two years ago, generative AI quickly captured the imagination of users around the world. When I look at [2025], the low-hanging fruit is gone," said Pichai, adding: "The hill is steeper ... You're definitely going to need deeper breakthroughs as we get to the next stage." But another seismic shift that changes the way most people think about or envision AI is unlikely to happen within the next year, said Pichai. In 2005, the sheriff’s office renewed efforts to solve the crime by uploading the DNA sample to the FBI’s national genetic database, CODIS. The first breakthrough came in 2022, after the sheriff’s office received a grant from the state attorney general’s office. With this funding, they sent the DNA sample to Parabons NanoLab in Virginia for genetic genealogy testing. Twenty-six years after Tracy’s death, the sheriff’s office used lab data to identify John Guillot Jr. as her killer. Parabon NanoLabs tested the DNA sample and traced the suspect’s family lines to the 1700s.
