They also planned to seize and kill a Supreme Court justice if they succeeded, police said, without naming the judge. Others have been convicted by the Supreme Court on charges of an attempted coup, among other crimes.

CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

Police found messages on Luiz’s social media criticizing and threatening state authorities, CNN Brasil reported. The suspect then tried to enter the Supreme Court building, but was unable to, and a second explosion was detonated outside the door, Leão added. A car found at the scene belonged to the suspected perpetrator, CNN Brasil reported, citing local police. Earlier, CNN Brasil reported an eyewitness saw a man with a backpack near the Supreme Court.

Brazilian media said another four people were identified at the Sao Paulo morgue, which did not confirm the information. Metsul, one of Brazil’s most respected meteorological companies, said Friday there were reports of severe icing in Sao Paulo state around the time of the crash. Sao Paulo state government said 26 families have already attended the morgue for identification efforts, with more expected on Sunday. It’s the largest reduction since 2016, when officials began using the current method of measurement. In the past 12 months, the Amazon rainforest lost 4,300 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), an area roughly the size of Rhode Island. Brazil’s deforestation surveillance year runs from August 1 to July 30. Amazon deforestation has steeply declined since the end of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s rule in 2022.

CNN —Dengue cases are surging in the Americas, with cases reported topping 5.2 million as of this week, surpassing a yearly record set in 2023, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). PAHO spokesperson Ashley Baldwin told CNN Thursday that 5,214,480 cases of dengue have been reported in the Americas as of Wednesday. In all of 2023, the total number of cases reported in the region was 4,572,765. “We are in an emergency situation because of dengue,” PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa said in a news briefing Thursday. Early detection and access to proper medical care will reduce the probability of dying due to severe dengue,” Baldwin added.

CNN —Prehistoric humans in Brazil carved drawings in the rock next to dinosaur footprints, suggesting that they may have found them meaningful or interesting, a new study has found. A dashed line indicates petroglyphs made by indigenous people, while a continuous line shows theropod dinosaur footprints. “I think rock art creation was embedded in some sort of ritual context: people gathering and creating something, perhaps utilizing some psychotropics.
