Congressional Republicans acknowledge that Vance hasn’t necessarily developed longstanding relationships on Capitol Hill during his abbreviated time in Washington. His coattails turned a 49-51 senate to a 53-47 senate,” Vance wrote on X on Wednesday. The three developed a bond that predates the campaign and has carried into the early days of Trump’s transition. But when you look at the effectiveness of JD in the campaign, there’s no better surrogate for President Trump’s agenda,” the adviser said. “In JD’s view, his role of VP is to take on any issue that President Trump would like him to take on,” the person close to Vance told CNN.

Donald Trump proposed mass deportation to lower housing costs and boost job opportunities. When I was a little girl, I used to ask my mom to adopt another child so that I could have an older sister. But once I started to get older (and learned how to be self-conscious), I wanted an older sibling to "show me the ropes," in a sense. And now, as a young woman who successfully (I hope) made it through being a teenager, I'm happy with that. I didn't need an older sibling figure to look up to, or one to look out for me. Even though I'm highly independent, I still ask my parents how to do things (like filing insurance claims).

Ms. Charles’s first memory of getting braids, at age 4, was painful. As an adult, she visited salons that were cluttered and dirty — it made her dread going. In September 2021, Ms. Charles opened her salon in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, offering a variety of braid styles, including straight back feed-in braids and braided updos. Her reach grew to include braiding hair for the rapper Cardi B and the reality TV star Tanisha Thomas. Ms. Charles was also part of the hair-braiding team for Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” visual album.

Three-quarters of the way through a grueling 10-day hospital stay for my older daughter, Orli, the cookbook author Joan Nathan called me from hospital reception. I met Joan in the hospital atrium. Joan told me about a time, decades earlier, when her own daughter, herself now a mother, was a baby being treated in this hospital. I couldn’t stay to hear more; every moment away from Orli was one I couldn’t retrieve. In Orli’s room I set the challah down on a paper plate and took a photo.

What it’s really like to live in Macao

Macao, the Chinese special administrative region (SAR) often twinned with Hong Kong, is known as the Las Vegas of Asia. But travelers who are willing to dig in a little deeper can explore Macanese culture, which mixes Portuguese, Chinese and Southeast Asian heritages. Macao is comprised of two islands – the north one, Macao itself, and its southern neighbor Taipa. “In Asia, [people] think that Macao is full of casinos, and I think they do not understand the other parts of Macao,” says Lai. That means that they can live in Macao without a work visa and do not need a company sponsoring them.

We alternate weeks, so the kids are with me one week and with him the next. Related storiesI know my kids may get less sleep, less quality meals, and less homework done at the other parent's home. Thinking ahead always helps to lower my stress and helps me maximize my time with my kids when they're with me. I also call to say goodnight most evenings, to let them know I'm always there and care. Having something to look forward to with my kids greatly helps my mental health.

‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’Even if the hairstyles in this play weren’t as fabulous as they were, Jocelyn Bioh’s “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” about a day in the life of African immigrants working in a Harlem hair-braiding shop, would still be a sparkling Broadway delight. That’s thanks to Bioh’s colorful characters and brisk, playful dialogue. I didn’t know until I saw David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic,” which kept me fully engaged through its full three-hour running time. We learn about the characters through the parts they play in making and performing this music — which, by the way, is amazing, and written by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire. Alongside the comedy and drama, “Jaja’s” features a multitude of strand mastery, as Bioh and the director Whitney White (“Our Dear Dead Drug Lord”) were determined to show a range of hairdos coming to life onstage. To pull this off, most of these styles are executed in real time with a little stage magic courtesy of wigs constructed by the hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis. Cast members, who braid hair onstage, practiced during rehearsals on wigs she designed for the performance. “There are so many moving pieces to the show that involve hair, and it’s not just me backstage,” Mathis said. “It’s also the actors onstage, it’s what Jocelyn has written, and it’s what Whitney will be helping us to reveal.”“Part of that,” she continued, “is going to be the magic of figuring out how we’re going to construct the wigs and how to potentially take them apart.”

This is how Komsomolskaya School Number 1 is marking the opening of a new school desk, a so-called “hero desk” emblazoned with the face and biography of one of Russia’s war dead, once a pupil at this very school. The desks are part of a pan-Russian initiative called the “New School Project” and are funded by “United Russia,” a staunchly pro-Putin party. As of early May, United Russia said there were more than 14,000 desks in 9,000 schools across the country. Local news reports suggest some schools use the desks to reward good behavior or good grades. The desks across the country are standardized: green, with military photographs, a biography, medals awarded (often posthumously) and the soldier’s date of death.

The distance hurdle to abortion without Roe v. Wade

One year without Roe v. Wade How access to abortion has changed The nearest abortion clinic became a lengthy journey for millions of peopleOne year ago on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide in the United States. When Roe v. Wade was overturned and states banned abortions, that number jumped almost 900 times to 16 million. The first map shows what the distance was when Roe v. Wade was in place and the second map shows what the distance is now, after Roe was overturned. The map on the left shows what the distance was in Guttmacher Institute’s “certain scenario” before Roe v. Wade was overturned. Two bar charts show that poverty and lack of healthcare both increase the farther one is from an abortion clinic with Roe v. Wade overturned.

[1/5] Handmade suits are seen at Anderson & Sheppard tailor on Savile Row, ahead of the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, in London, Britain, April 27, 2023. REUTERS/Dylan MartinezLONDON, May 2 (Reuters) - On Savile Row, the London street long celebrated for turning out sharp suits, tailors have been racing to prepare the red and gold uniforms that will feature in Britain's first coronation for 70 years, adorned with the new insignia of King Charles. Savile Row tailors have dressed kings, queens and their offspring for more than 150 years, and their craft gets a particular boost from long-time customer Charles - a lover of the countryside who also champions the farmers, weavers and mills producing much of the fabric. 'SLOWEST FASHION'Henry Poole, credited with creating the dinner jacket, or tuxedo, has held a British royal warrant since the 1860s when it supplied Queen Victoria. "The sustainability side of that is a major part of what Savile Row has always had," he said.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Metropolitan Opera’s music director, dressed in a blazing sapphire jacket and trim black pants, stood before a mirror backstage on a recent afternoon and smiled. “Oh my God, it’s so good,” he said, waving his baton. His outfit was modeled on one worn onstage by a band leader in Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production. Could the golden braid that dangled from his right shoulder be fastened, so it did not create a distraction in the pit? Was the jacket comfortable enough to accommodate the sweeping gestures that the music demanded?
Ciara Imani May launched Rebundle, a sustainable synthetic braiding hair startup, in 2019. The business closed a $2.1 million pre-seed round in December, which included investors like Colin Kaepernick. Through her research, she realized that the majority of synthetic braiding hair is terrible for the planet, as it's often made of harmful toxins and nonreusable plastics. The brand's first product, Braid Better — lightweight, comfortable, itch-free, and biodegradable hair extensions — launched its limited product line in January 2021. Since then, Rebundle relaunched as a direct-to-consumer brand, raised a $2.1 million pre-seed round, acquired hundreds of repeat customers, and scaled to a seven-person team.
