Enacted by Congress in 2022, "Secure 2.0" ushered in sweeping changes to the U.S. retirement system, including several updates to 401(k) plans. 'Exciting change' for catch-up contributionsFor 2025, employees can defer $23,500 into 401(k) plans, up from $23,000 in 2024. Shorter wait for part-time workersSecure 2.0 has also boosted access to 401(k) and 403(b) plans for certain part-time workers. Starting in 2024, employers were required to extend plan access to part-time employees who worked at least 500 hours annually for three consecutive years. "That's a very good thing for long-term part-time workers" who may have struggled to qualify for 401(k) eligibility, said Stinnett.

Some advocates for gender-affirming care for youth say the report mischaracterizes the normal caution being taken by researchers to carefully present and interpret scientific data. “They’re in really good shape when they come in, and they’re in really good shape after two years,” Olson-Kennedy told the Times. Her description appears to contradict the baseline characteristics of the 95 study participants, which were published in 2022. Numerous studies have documented high rates of suicide and suicidal thoughts in transgender children and teenagers, and the physical changes of puberty can greatly increase the distress of feeling trapped in the wrong body. Nine children – about 4% of the sample – expressed regret over puberty blockers or hormones, and four discontinued their therapy.

CNN —America’s largest drug store chain named a new chief executive officer on Friday, with longtime CVS Health executive David Joyner replacing Karen Lynch. In August, rising costs at CVS’ insurance arm Aetna cut into profits, leading to the ousting of then-president Brian Kane. Charles Krupa/AP/FileLower reimbursement rates for prescription drugs have hit retail pharmacies, including Walgreens and Rite-Aid, resulting in flagging profits and forcing drug stores to shutter locations and cut jobs. Meanwhile, rival chain Walgreens is closing 1,200 stores as it faces competition from online pharmacies and larger retailers — another challenge facing drug stores. Owning a home makes some people feel more confident about their prospects for retirement — but that may be misguided, some experts say. Of those who said they were ahead or on schedule, 42% cite an early start in retirement savings helped them get ahead. The survey polled 6,657 adults, including 2,603 retired adults and 4,054 adult workers, in August. "Homeowners are actually more likely to be overconfident in their retirement readiness," Chen said. CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Fatherhood is good for dads. Here’s why

CNN —Many arguments about why dads should do more parenting focus on why that would be good for their wives or partners and kids. Simon & SchusterBut with their kids, dads have a chance to explore all these sides and more, often away from the scrutiny of the public eye. Dads really are doing more careIt may not always feel like fathers are doing more parenting, but they are. One cross-national study found that dads spent an average of 16 minutes a day caring for their kids in 1965. Also, dads find parenting “extremely important to their identity,” and enjoyable and rewarding nearly identically as often moms do.

This week, the pope is due to make an historic intervention in the debate around AI at the G7 summit in southern Italy’s Puglia region. AI, the pope believes, can make the world a better place only if it serves the “common good” and does not increase inequalities. European Union lawmakers have already passed a law regulating AI, while a bipartisan group of US senators have set out plans for AI regulation that could lead to federal legislation. “AI and emerging technologies are on Pope Francis’ radar screen,” Larrey, now a professor of philsophy at Boston College, told CNN. It’s clear that Francis sees AI as part of what he called the “epochal change” taking place at the beginning of the 21st century.

Perhaps the last thing the market needs is another shady financial product that pushes low-income Americans into homes they can’t afford, under terms that could bankrupt them. The zero-down mortgage is making a comeback, my colleague Matt Egan reports. And honestly, when has the value of the housing market ever gone anywhere but up up up up? The housing market, as we all remember from “The Big Short,” does not always go up. One way for motivated buyers to hunt for a lower mortgage rate is buy someone else’s.

Millions of Americans worry about Social Security — whether they will get the full retirement paychecks promised to them in years to come. And many younger people believe — incorrectly, in my view — that by the time they are ready to retire, Social Security will no longer be there for them. The latest annual Social Security Trust Funds report in May said that unless action was taken, benefit cuts of roughly 20 percent would have to start in 2033. Yet when you stop and really look at the problem, it turns out that what’s required for fixing Social Security is no big deal. It’s based on hard numbers calculated by Alicia Munnell, a Boston College economics professor who is among the nation’s premier experts on Social Security.

Zero-down mortgages are making a comeback
  + stars: | 2024-05-30 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
That massive roadblock is being removed by a new zero-percent down mortgage program launched two weeks ago by one of the nation’s largest mortgage lenders. ‘Demand has been huge’These mortgages are only open to first-time homebuyers and those making no more than 80% of the area’s median income. That’s because in order to refinance at a lower rate, the homeowner would need to fully pay off that second mortgage. For instance, Bank of America launched a zero-down payment mortgage program in 2022 for first-time homebuyers in certain Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. “These mortgages are going to be ticking time bombs – just like subprime mortgages –unless home prices continue to increase very substantially,” Kelleher said.
