In a move that’s perhaps more symbolic than business-minded, Barnes & Noble, America’s largest retail bookseller, has reclaimed the flagship store it vacated in 2013. But Barnes & Noble would revamp its business model. “The problem with Barnes & Noble when I took it over was that the bookstores themselves weren’t very good,” Daunt told CNN. Foot traffic data for Barnes & Noble show that visits are up by 7% since 2019, according to location analytics company Placer.ai. Shannon DeVito, head of books at Barnes & Noble, says that beyond reigniting a love for reading, the BookTok trend has guided stores on what to stock.

Rubin died Friday at a hospital in Manhattan after “a brief and sudden illness,” according to his nephew, David Rotter. “Steve Rubin was a great publisher,” Grisham said in a statement. “For more than a month, it was humanly impossible to miss ‘Fire and Fury,’" Rubin wrote in his memoir “Words and Music,” published earlier this year. Books3 is already the subject of multiple lawsuits against Meta and other companies using the system to train AI. Now, thanks to a database published by The Atlantic last week pulling from Books3, authors can see whether their books specifically are being used to train these AI systems. NEW YORK (AP) — Historical novels by Jayne Anne Phillips and Paul Harding and Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s dystopian prison novel “Chain-Gang All-Stars” are among the nominees on the National Book Awards long list for fiction. The judges, who include authors, critics and booksellers, will narrow the lists to five next month, and winners will be announced Nov. 15 during a dinner ceremony in downtown Manhattan. The foundation also will present honorary awards to poet Rita Dove and bookseller Paul Yamazaki of the famed City Lights store in San Francisco. Drew Barrymore had been scheduled to host the ceremony but was dropped by the foundation after she resumed her talk show in the midst of the Hollywood actors and writers strike. The foundation has not yet named a replacement.

Amazon representatives are expected to meet this week with members of the commission to discuss the possible suit, a sign that legal action may be imminent. Even as books have become a smaller slice of the company, Amazon has become an overwhelming force in the book market.
