The case could have wide-reaching implications for transgender youth living in states that have passed similar laws. After the first gender-affirming care ban for minors became law in 2021, a flurry of states passed similar measures. While 19 states passed laws banning gender-affirming care for minors last year, 11 states and the District of Columbia passed “shield” laws protecting access to care. So far this year, Ohio, Wyoming, South Carolina and New Hampshire joined the list of states banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Not all laws banning gender-affirming care are currently being enforced.

Who is Kash Patel, Trump’s pick for FBI director?
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Jack Forrest | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
CNN —Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI and an ardent supporter of the president-elect, has vowed to help dismantle the same organization he’s poised to lead. The FBI director must also be confirmed by the Senate, where members are already bracing for how they’ll navigate a slew of unorthodox Trump selections. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss-up” between Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as to whom the president-elect would pick for FBI director, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Trump briefly floated Patel as a potential replacement for then-CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom he had considered firing after the 2020 election. Patel was also put in charge of the Pentagon transition effort for Trump’s first term, overseeing coordination with the incoming Biden-Harris administration.

A Wisconsin judge on Monday struck down portions of a 2011 law that stripped most government workers in the state of collective bargaining rights and set off fierce demonstrations. The ruling by Judge Jacob Frost of the Dane County Circuit Court is certain to be appealed. “Restoring union freedoms to Wisconsin workers will strengthen Wisconsin’s middle class, lift up the voices of workers and lead to better public services for our communities,” said Stephanie Bloomingdale, the president of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, in a statement. Republicans passed the law, known as Act 10, shortly after winning control of state government in the 2010 elections, arguing that limits on public sector unions were necessary to balance the budget and attract business investments. They advanced the legislation despite large-scale protests at the State Capitol in Madison and an attempt by Democratic lawmakers to scuttle the vote by fleeing to Illinois.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday he would pick Kash Patel, the former chief of staff to to the acting secretary of defense during the first Trump administration, to serve as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and “America First” fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People," Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social, arguing Patel would "bring back Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity to the FBI." Patel has earned a reputation as the ultimate Trump loyalist who has called for a purge of perceived enemies in the Justice Department and intelligence agencies. During the closing months of Trump’s tenure, the former president proposed Patel to serve as the deputy CIA director or to take over the FBI. He accused Patel of being a Washington bureaucrat who would interfere in a case where he was not needed.

The oak frameworks and lead roofing of the nave, choir and transept of Notre Dame were reconstructed to look exactly like the originals, according to Rebuild Notre Dame. “We use the same materials, oak and stone, and with the same techniques.”The nave of Notre Dame cathedral.

CNN —When photographer Elizabeth Kahane’s husband asked where in New York they should live following their engagement in 1998, she had a very specific requirement for their marital home: A view of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Its street-facing windows offered the perfect vantage point to watch — and photograph — the procession, which travels down through midtown Manhattan to Macy’s department store on Thanksgiving morning. The photographer has captured the spectacle almost every year since, missing the parade just twice in over a quarter of a century. Thomas the Tank Engine, the Kool-Aid Man and Boss Baby are just some of the dozens of other outsized characters Kahane has pictured floating slowly past her home — often at eye-level. An Arizona man has been arrested after he allegedly posted videos online that showed him brandishing an AR-15-style rifle and threatening to kill President-elect Donald Trump and members of Trump's family, authorities said. Manuel Tamayo-Torres posted videos on a "near-daily basis" in which he accused Trump and the president-elect's family members of kidnapping and sex-trafficking his children, according to charging documents filed in federal court in Arizona.
