LA PAZ, Bolivia — Bolivian ex-president Evo Morales said on Sunday his vehicle was fired upon amid rising political tensions in the South American country between a faction around the iconic former leader and the government of his former ally, President Luis Arce. Morales posted a video on Facebook taken inside a moving car, showing him sitting in the front passenger seat and at least two bullet holes in the windshield. Morales and Arce, his former economy minister, are both part of the same socialist MAS political party but have clashed over the last year, part of a power struggle ahead of 2025 elections. Morales is also facing allegations that he had relationships with minors. He was formally summoned by regional prosecutors to testify in the case but did not appear, and now faces an arrest warrant.

CNN —Bolivia’s former president Evo Morales said his car was fired on in what he claimed was an “assassination attempt” amid simmering political tensions in the South American country. Morales posted to his Instagram profile a statement from his party, Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), blaming the attack on current Bolivian President Luis Arce and two of his government ministers. Throughout the past year, Morales has clashed with sitting president Arce – his fellow MAS party member and former ally – as both politicians battle for reelection in 2025. The blockades were established after the government announced a judicial investigation into the former president over an alleged case of human trafficking. Morales denies having committed any crime and attributed the investigation to political persecution by Arce.

Then, peering out over the country’s main political plaza on Wednesday, Bolivia’s top ministers saw the armored vehicles and troops spilling out their doors. Within moments, the president, Luis Arce, addressed his inner circle — “We are facing a coup!” — before heading to the presidential palace to confront, face to face, the general trying to remove him from power. The coup attempt failed, lasting a mere three hours, and ended in the arrest of the general, whose motivation for the attack appeared to be, at least in part, anger over his firing by Mr. Arce the day before. But it was hardly the end of Mr. Arce’s problem, or the challenges facing Bolivia. Mr. Arce, 60, a former finance minister, took office in 2020 during a democratic election that seemed to symbolize a new, more hopeful chapter in a country coming off a period of intense political tumult.

CNN —Bolivia’s President Luis Arce called on the country to “organize and mobilize against the coup d’état, in favor of democracy” as soldiers and armored military vehicles positioned themselves around governmental buildings in La Paz on Wednesday. “We cannot allow coup attempts to take Bolivian lives once again. It is unclear why military units are in Murillo Plaza and how many there are. Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña stressed that democracy and the rule of law be respected, in a statement on X. According to state media agency ABI, the military mobilization began around 2:30 p.m. local time.

Members of Bolivia’s military attempted to storm the presidential palace in the capital, La Paz, on Wednesday afternoon, in an apparent coup attempt led by a top general who declared he was leading an effort to “re-establish democracy.”Video on Bolivian television showed security forces in riot gear occupying the country’s main political square, Plaza Murillo, a camouflaged tank ramming into a palace door and soldiers trying to make their way into the palace. Then, just as quickly as they had appeared, the general, Juan José Zúñiga disappeared, and his supporters in the armed forces pulled back and were replaced by police officers supporting the president. The country’s democratically elected president, Luis Arce, even dared to venture into the plaza, after calling on Bolivians “to organize and mobilize against this coup and in favor of democracy.”
