The reality is that both parties learn lessons from losing elections that apply only in the short term — say, from one presidential election to the next midterm or from one midterm to the next presidential election. Not anymore — it’s why Democrats usually overperform in special elections, with more devoted “every election” voters right now. Meanwhile, in the non-battlegrounds, which were more affected by the basic “mood music” of the election, Democrats were shellacked. The seeds of discontent with this version of the Democratic Party can be traced back a decade to Obama’s decision to anoint Hillary Clinton as his successor. I’ve learned this from studying American reactions to almost every general election presidential debate since 1992. Yet those things often have little to no discernible impact on the opinions of many people watching at home. To be fair, some of the debates I watched with voters, like Bill Clinton and Bob Dole’s in 1996, had no major impact on the electorate’s mood. Others — like the three-way town hall debate with Mr. Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot in 1992 and the first George W. Bush-Al Gore debate in 2000 and the three Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton collisions — arguably changed history.

Mr. Manafort, 75, was an adviser for Bob Dole’s presidential campaign in 1996 and managed the Republican convention that year. He was brought on to Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign in the spring as the candidate was facing an effort to deprive him of the delegates necessary to become the nominee at the convention. Mr. Manafort’s involvement with Mr. Trump’s campaign was relatively short-lived. Later, Mr. Manafort was ensnared in the investigation by Robert S. Unlike Obama and Clinton before him, Biden is running against a candidate only a few years his junior. It was a twist on how Clinton answered a question about Dole's age during the second presidential debate in 1996. There is not much precedent for the event Biden's campaign is putting on Thursday. His performance so far reflects his success at transforming the Republican Party in his image. The most important message from the primaries is the most straightforward: Trump’s coalition is the dominant faction in the GOP. Like McConnell’s announcement, the choices by GOP elected officials in the primary contest signal their acknowledgement of the party’s direction. The share of GOP elected officials who have endorsed Haley isn’t anywhere near as large as her share of the total vote. But a deeper factor also explains the imbalance in support among GOP elected officials.

Upholding that proud tradition, President Joe Biden is headed to the border on Thursday — and so is former President Donald Trump. I’m a lifelong resident of Arizona, and border-state voters have heard a lot of talk, but haven’t seen much action. The president’s only other visit to the border was a year ago, briefly stopping in El Paso before racing back home. This would at least mitigate Biden’s polling drop while also giving border states and blue cities a respite from the migrant influx. They’re done with photo-ops next to broken border walls and other campaign stunts.

Polling in Michigan and many of the Super Tuesday states suggests the results will get increasingly worse for Haley from here. And given the deep commitment so many delegates have to Trump, Haley stretching out a long negative primary does not make her a likely Trump emergency replacement. In the coming days, Haley will hear from many Republicans who don’t want the Republican primary to end any time soon. But past primaries have gone on longer because other candidates have kept winning; Haley has no wins on the horizon.

The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

Ron DeSantis, who had staked his campaign on a strong showing in Iowa, came in at a distant second, with 21.2% of the vote. “You helped us get a ticket pushed out of the Hawkeye State,” DeSantis told supporters in Iowa Monday night. And about two-thirds – 66% – of the GOP Iowa voters believe President Joe Biden did not legitimately win the presidency in 2020. The state also prides itself on giving a boost to lesser-known contenders who make the effort to meet one-on-one with Hawkeye State voters. COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley pushed across ice-cold Iowa Saturday to find voters open to an alternative to former President Donald Trump with just two days before the state's caucuses open the Republican primary calendar. DeSantis in particular is under great pressure in Iowa given his campaign's heavy bet on a strong finish in the caucuses. The final poll from Iowa’s premier pollster, Ann Selzer, has Trump at 48% followed by former South Carolina Gov. If the final outcome Monday night mirrors the poll, Trump will have won the highest Iowa GOP caucus vote share for a non-incumbent ever. A Haley win in the first primary race in the nation would indicate that Trump is not invincible. He did more than 5 points better than where his final Iowa poll had him. (His 28-point margin over Bradley was the same as the final poll found, as both Bradley and Gore won some undecided voters.)

On the Democratic side, Barack Obama won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 and went on to win the White House. And Trump, although he’s the favorite in pre-caucus polling this year, lost the Iowa caucuses in 2016 to Cruz. Weren’t there some problems with the Iowa caucuses? This is the first time since 1972 that the Iowa caucuses will not be the first event on Democrats’ presidential nomination calendar. CNN —Donald Trump is promising a second presidency that would be an aberration in American history. And Trump’s ambitions should be taken seriously because one year from the election, President Joe Biden’s reelection hopes are far from secure. He dehumanizes his political enemies, has discredited the legal, political and electoral system, has demonized the press and has targeted vulnerable members of society, minorities and immigrants, as scapegoats. With questionable historic comparisons, Trump’s critics only fuel his bid to provoke the outrage that is essential to his political appeal. Nikki Haley have only criticized Trump obliquely, understanding there’s no market in the modern Republican Party for confronting Trump’s lawlessness.

All those candidates, however, then proceeded to lose the New Hampshire primary and the party nomination. Only 26% of New Hampshire Republican primary voters identified the same way. Trump has also been weaker among demographic groups who make up a larger share of the New Hampshire Republican electorate. Although the 2016 Iowa entrance poll did not ask about income, the 2020 general election exit poll did. (Note: Household and family income are somewhat different measures, but I’m merely demonstrating that New Hampshire Republicans are, on the whole, wealthier than Iowa Republicans.)
