Two Colombian nationals are facing extradition to the U.S. for their alleged role in a human smuggling operation that resulted in the disappearance at sea of dozens of migrants. Rivera and Linero were arrested by Colombian authorities in coordination with the U.S. as part of Joint Task Force Alpha. Joint Task Force Alpha was started in 2021 with a focus on migrant smuggling through Central America and Mexico. Mandatory minimum sentences for migrant smuggling as a stand-alone offense are relatively low compared to similar offenses like drug smuggling, but these aggravating factors allow prosecutors to seek harsher punishments. While Joint Task Force Alpha was started by the Biden administration, analysts believe it is likely to continue or even expand under the incoming Trump administration.

An 11-year-old girl survived three days in stormy seas by clinging to two tire inner-tubes after the migrant boat she was traveling on sank off the coast of Italy, a charity said. Rubber inner tubes, which the 11 year old girl used as floatation devices. She was found with the two inner-tubes and a life-vest and “had no drinking water or food with her, and although she was suffering from hypothermia, she was responsive and alert,” Compass Collective added. While they typically assist larger vessels, the crew of the 13-meter-long German Trotamar III sometimes perform urgent sea rescues as they did in this case. The vessel has saved 1,653 people in distress at sea since it began its operation in August 2023, Compass Collective said.

The girl is from Sierra Leone and has been named as “Yasmine” in Italian media. A storm in the area at the time had halted operations for several NGO rescue vessels around the Italian island of Lampedusa. She is expected to survive, according to the Red Cross, which manages the migrant center on the island. Earlier this year, Italy attempted to open migrant processing centers in Albania, but their legality has been caught up in the Italian court system.

The Wisconsin man, who allegedly faked his own death before turning up alive and well overseas, returned to U.S. soil where sheriff's deputies booked him into jail, authorities said Wednesday. Ryan Borgwardt arrived in the United States on Tuesday and was taken to the Green Lake County Jail on unspecified charges, Sheriff Mark Podoll told reporters. Borgwardt is accused of staging his Aug. 12 disappearance while kayaking on Green Lake, about 100 miles northwest of Milwaukee. When Borgwardt didn't come home on that day, searchers found a capsized kayak and his vehicle and trailer parked in Dodge Memorial County Park. After international call for help to find Borgwardt, a Russian-speaking woman reached out to Green Lake County Sheriff's deputies and helped them contact the wayward father, authorities said.

CNN —A Wisconsin man who officials say faked his own death and fled to Eastern Europe was charged with a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer Wednesday after he turned himself in to authorities. At the request of the prosecutor, Slate did not order but instead requested the media not share images of Borgwardt’s family members. The following day, two fishermen casting along the lake found a fishing rod that belonged to Borgwardt, his wife told officials. In October, investigators learned from Canadian officials Borgwardt had entered the country on August 13. Borgwardt told police he didn’t realize organizations like that existed, the complaint says.

Other killer whales feed on fish, octopus and marine mammals, but the diet of Southern Resident whales is almost entirely salmon. Another orca wearing a salmon hat was photographed during a 2019 survey by the marine conservation group Ocean Wise. Even if J27’s fish-wearing doesn’t signal a return of salmon hats among the Southern Resident orcas, what does the behavior mean? In fact, strong social connections between Southern Resident orcas might explain why salmon-wearing became so popular in 1987, Garrett added.
