Comcast announced a plan Wednesday to spin off most of its cable television networks into a separate publicly traded company. The new company will include the USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and the Golf Channel. Comcast will retain key NBCUniversal assets, including the NBC broadcast network, NBC News, NBC Sports, the streaming service Peacock, and the cable channel Bravo. The move comes as the traditional cable television bundle faces stiff economic headwinds, most notably the rise of cord-cutting and the shift to streaming alternatives. Many parents and pro-ban campaigners have lauded the bill as a long overdue measure to impose accountability on tech companies for tools Australian children use online. Both sides agree about the risks of children spending too much time online, and the need for tech companies to do more to safeguard their products. The man accused of killing Laken Riley earlier this year "went out hunting for females" on the day the nursing student in Georgia was slain, prosecutors told a judge Friday on the first day of Jose Antonio Ibarra's trial. The man accused of killing Georgia nursing student Laken Riley has waived his right to a jury, paving the way for his bench trial, which is expected to begin Friday morning. A man accused of murder after a 911 call about a fake bear attack in the mountains of Tennessee led authorities to a dead man last month has been found and arrested, police said Sunday. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it was informed Sunday that Hamlett, who had been sought on a first-degree murder warrant, was found and arrested in South Carolina. “The sharing of Hamlett’s wanted poster led the public, whom is our most valuable resource, to act as our eyes and ears,” Monroe County Sheriff Tommy J. Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. It also means that, for the first time in history, Maryland will have a Black senator, governor and mayor of its largest city, Baltimore. Hogan could never quite replicate the support he received from Democrats as governor in his Senate campaign. In Hogan, many Marylanders saw a Republican who represented an increasingly rare version of the party prior to Trump’s takeover.

— Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride won the state’s only House seat Tuesday, NBC News projects, making her the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. McBride, a Democrat, defeated Republican John Whalen III, taking 57.8% of the vote with 95% of the vote in. She thanked her friends and family and her late husband, Andy Cray, who died of cancer in 2014, just days after their wedding. He said he persuaded six Republicans to vote for McBride. In 2020, she was elected to represent Delaware’s 1st Senate District, which includes Claymont, Bellefonte and parts of Edgemoor and Wilmington, becoming the country’s first openly trans state senator.

Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester will become the first Black woman to represent Delaware in the Senate after she defeated Republican Eric Hansen and independent candidate Mike Katz, NBC News projects. Blunt Rochester, 62, told NBC News before Election Day that she had her sights set on creating jobs, protecting reproductive rights, health care and centering the needs of seniors and families. Blunt Rochester said that despite her lead in the polls, she took nothing for granted. In her grief, Blunt Rochester said, she sought direction and felt inspired to run for office. EMILY’s List, which supports women running for elected office, called Blunt Rochester a “groundbreaking leader” in a statement Tuesday night.
