‘Weight of the World’Producer/Director Esther Dere and Nicole RittenmeyerCo-Producer Leah VarjacquesProducer/Reporter Dani BlumProducer Rachel AbramsWatch our new documentary on FX and Hulu starting Friday, Nov. 22, at 10 p.m. Eastern. The ascent of GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, has brought about a transformation within the weight-loss industry and beyond, reshaping societal views on health and body image. Originally developed to manage diabetes, these drugs have become associated with rapid weight reduction, capturing public interest thanks to rumored endorsements from high-profile figures like Oprah Winfrey and Elon Musk. “Weight of the World” dives into this pivotal moment, following the journeys of three individuals as they navigate the complexities of using GLP-1 medications. Through expert commentary from medical professionals, dietitians and cultural critics, the film looks at this evolving landscape, and it investigates the societal obsession with thinness and the implications of these new pharmaceutical interventions, raising questions about body image, health and the ongoing struggle against obesity.

GE Vernova can help meet the massive energy demands from artificial intelligence, according to Wells Fargo. The firm initiated coverage of the energy company with an overweight rating. Analyst Michael Blum said robust power demand tied to AI could lead to GE Vernova emerging as a key beneficiary, especially because the subsequent buildout will require an update to the power grid. The conservative shift comes as streamers try to make every dollar count but face cultural hurdles. The Prime Video series will be the first to come out of Amazon's deal with The Wonder Project, a Christian-focused production company for faith-based films and TV shows. In this newly conservative greenlighting era, buyers are looking around for sure things and pockets of audiences where there's opportunity. "Conservative, faith-based, family, is not a bad place to look," Thompson said. AdvertisementStudios and streamers want to serve rural America but are reluctant to touch something they consider too religious or conservative.

"Heretic," the newest horror movie from indie studio A24, doesn't use any generative AI. AdvertisementA24's new horror movie "Heretic" is a terrifying rumination on faith and belief. But the duo still chose to include a disclaimer in their film's end credits stating that no generative AI was used to make their movie. They're specifically talking about generative AI, in which the technology creates new images, videos, or text content. "'Heretic' is very much a personal movie," Beck said.

First Solar is the largest manufacturer of solar panels in the U.S. and is rated overweight at Wells Fargo. But the domestic manufacturing tax credits that benefit First Solar are likely to survive because they support jobs in GOP congressional districts, according to the bank. Tailwinds from tariffs, however, would be offset by headwinds from IRA repeal if the GOP goes after the manufacturing tax credits. In the universe of publicly-traded solar stocks, however, analysts view First Solar as best positioned to weather the storm. "In our view, higher tariffs on imported solar panels would diminish competition from Chinese manufacturers, pushing demand towards First Solar's U.S.-made products."

After playing to the coasts, Hollywood is leaning toward faith and family-based shows and films. The Prime Video series will be the first to come out of Amazon's deal with The Wonder Project, a Christian-focused production company, for faith-based films and TV shows. After playing to the coasts with shows that embraced progressive themes, Hollywood is leaning into broadly appealing fare. That shift has included a combination of undeniably faith-based, conservative-themed, and family-aimed entertainment, agents, producers, and industry experts say. "Conservative, faith-based, family, is not a bad place to look," Thompson said.

This was, perhaps, the closest thing the White Sox have had to a prideful moment all season. As The Athletic’s Jayson Stark noted, the White Sox have used 29 position players this season. After their most recent downturn — a 12-game skid — the White Sox besting the Mets for worst ever became a matter of when, not if. Getz insisted the White Sox are on the right trajectory and even said ownership will “potentially” invest more in the organizational infrastructure. Now members of this White Sox team will shoulder the burden of 121 losses and counting into an uncertain future.

In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. It doesn’t mean that race is entirely ruled out of the admissions process, however. Poon, who is the author of “Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations about Race, Affirmative Action, and Family,” said that with race masked in the admissions process, concerns around biases are actually more prevalent. And it’s going to be difficult to determine, for example, why there were drops in Asian American enrollment at some schools as well.

Counterfeit Ozempic Is on the Rise
  + stars: | 2024-07-12 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Experts have grown increasingly concerned about fake versions of Ozempic and popular weight loss drugs. These copycats can look deceptively real, and may contain dangerous substances or entirely different drugs altogether. In June, the World Health Organization warned that fake batches of Ozempic were found in the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Also in June, Eli Lilly issued a letter expressing concern that counterfeit versions of its own drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound, were being sold online, through social media and at medical spas. Those who study the counterfeit drug market say these findings are alarming, but not all that surprising.

The Promise of Weight-Loss Drugs
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In the past two years, Ozempic has become a synonym for weight loss. Ozempic was weight loss; weight loss was Ozempic. Scientists believe the drugs are about to revolutionize several fields of medicine, such as cardiology and endocrinology. If these trials prove successful, the drugs may extend many lives by years, save billions in medical costs and divide public health into before-and-after epochs. These drugs, called GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists), mystify even the scientists who study them.
