“I was completely stunned when he mentioned violence so bluntly,” said the 32-year-old, who was born and raised in China. In Britain, “Cafe Scientifique,” a laid-back science debate forum, kicked off in 1998 and “Pint of Science,” a three-day science festival, launched in May 2013. Unlike Western universities, which generally welcome the public, most Chinese campuses remain fenced off, keeping their academic resources exclusive to students, faculty and authorized personnel. Nationalist voices online have also grown into a powerful unofficial force policing speech across Chinese social media. Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —In the city of Kherson, southern Ukraine, civilians have started to hope for heavy rain – the only weather conditions that prevent Russian drones from flying overhead, they say. Today, the threat of occupation still looms just across the river, where Russian military positions are literally within sight. Difficult to combatThe frequency of the attacks and the drones’ small size make them difficult for Ukrainian forces to thwart. Russia has been repeatedly accused of targeting Ukrainian civilians by Kyiv, its Western allies, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations. On Monday, an ambulance was hit in a Russian drone strike on an urban area of Kherson, injuring two paramedics.

Russian troops are crashing into anti-tank barriers in Kursk, Russia. AdvertisementRussian commanders are misplacing anti-tank barriers, which their own troops and civilians are crashing into, according to several Russian hardliners. The Russian military bloggers, who've long been an important source of independent information about the Russian military, complained that "dozens" of military personnel and civilians had lost their lives crashing into the barriers, according to the ISW. AdvertisementRussian commanders have, throughout the war, faced criticism from Russia's military bloggers for what they say are inept decisions that have hampered Russia's campaign in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces occupy around 386 square miles of territory in Kursk, while Russian forces have continued to make incremental advances in east Ukraine.

Russian troops have been using Discord to coordinate drone attacks, but it was banned on Tuesday. Federal regulators said they blocked the gaming messaging platform because it could be used for crime. Discord allows users to join a closed group voice call and livestream to other users from their screens or cameras. One pundit channel, Military Informant, blasted Roskomnadzor's decision as "madness," while another sarcastically thanked the regulator for giving Russian troops another challenge to "bypass the consequences of another wise decision." Discord, Roskomnadzor, and the Russian defense ministry did not immediately respond to comment requests sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian troops on Wednesday took charge of the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, a bastion that had resisted intense attacks since Russia launched its full-scale assault in 2022. Russian Telegram channels, however, published video of troops waving the Russian tricolor flag over shattered buildings. Russia has been using pincer tactics to trap and then constrict Ukrainian strongholds. Russian bloggers said Russia could now try to push towards Velyka Novosilka, just over 20 miles to the west. Russian forces currently control 98.5% of the Luhansk region and 60% of the Donetsk region.

Russia appears to have finally seized Vuhledar, a key frontline town in eastern Ukraine. AdvertisementRussia appears to have gained control over a key Ukrainian frontline town, military experts said, as the town's governor described a difficult situation for Ukraine there. Citing open sources and pro-Russian military bloggers, the Institute for the Study of War said that as of Tuesday, "Russian forces likely seized Vuhledar." Russian forces have been seen moving freely about the town and planting flags there, the ISW reported. CNN —Russia has captured the key eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, ending months of resistance and underscoring the scale of Kyiv’s challenge as it heads into its third wartime winter. While not a transport and logistics hub like Pokrovsk, Vuhledar was heavily fortified and viewed as a crucial bastion at the intersection of Ukraine’s eastern and southern fronts. Just like Avdiivka, another strategic eastern town which fell in February, Vuhledar is a victim, not of Russian strategic prowess, but brute force attrition. For two years Ukraine had put up a formidable defense there, as Russia tried and failed several times to take the town. “It’s painful, Vuhledar or rather those who settled there, drank a lot of blood,” he said.

Russia has launched a major counterattack in its Kursk border region, more than a month after a surprise invasion by Kyiv’s forces that turned the tables in the two-and-a-half-year war. Ukraine has claimed to hold some 500 square miles of Russian territory in Kursk after sweeping across the border on Aug. 6 and taking Moscow by surprise. NBC News was able to geolocate a video purporting to show a column of what appears to be Russian military vehicles moving toward the settlement of Snagost in the Kursk region. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has long conjured images of war that Europe thought had been consigned to the history books. Several Ukrainian military units have shared videos of these drones in action in recent days. Ukraine’s 108th separate mountain assault battalion shared another video over the weekend, saying that its drone pilots had flown the “dragon drones” over Russian positions. Video purportedly shows a Ukrainian "dragon drone" shared on Telegram by Zelenskyy's chief adviser Andriy Yermak on Monday. They also include at least one instance of the fiery drones being used in Russia’s border Kursk region, which Ukrainian troops invaded last month, he said.

Related storiesExactly how overloaded the Russian rail network may be isn't clear. Despite the humiliation of foreign troops occupying Russian soil, Russian forces continue to grind forward in bloody attacks at places such as Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk region. Relying on trucks would require an extraordinary number of vehicles, so it seems likely that Russian forces at Kursk will require multiple railheads that depend on a limited number of railroad bridges. However, Ukraine has captured data about the Russian railway system, which will make it easier to disrupt operations, Fraser noted. Barros believes that Ukraine could seriously disrupt Russian rail traffic and logistics if the US would lift those restrictions.

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory.
