CNN —Soccer star Kylian Mbappé has called the first round of French elections “catastrophic” after last Sunday’s results saw the country lurch towards the far-right with anti-immigration party National Rally (RN) leading first place. Paris CNN —French soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé made a dramatic foray into the country’s election campaign this week, but don’t expect the striker to have an influence on the outcome. The far-right National Rally party of anti-immigration leader Marine Le Pen is leading in the polls, and most pundits suspect her populist movement has never come this close to power. Leaders of the French far-right National Rally, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, attend a rally ahead of the European Parliament elections where the party had huge success earlier this month. In 2006, Marine Le Pen’s father, far-right patriarch Jean-Marie Le Pen, suggested there were too many “players of color” on the national side. While millions will cheer them on at the Euros, they serve as a visible reminder of the country’s changing demographics — an issue which animates voters for the National Rally like no other.

ATHENS, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Greece came from a goal down to hold France to a 2-2 draw in their final Euro 2024 qualifier in Group B on Tuesday, denying Didier Deschamps' side a perfect record in their qualifying campaign. Coach Fabien Galthie and his assistants were satisfied with the win against an All Blacks side, who were previously unbeaten in all 31 of their previous World Cup pool games, but they were quick to point out the team's shortcomings in defence. France missed 21 tackles in the first half and assistant coach Laurent Labit was not so happy with Penaud's performance in that area. France, who are assisted by former referee Jerome Garces, who held the whistle in the 2019 World Cup final, produced a disciplined display. Despite their flaws, Les Bleus still crushed the All Blacks to underline their might. "When you look at it it's incredible to score almost 30 points against them," said captain Antoine Dupont.
