There wasn't anywhere else I'd thought about living — until I went to see a friend in Lake Chapala. 'Everything I need is within reach'A friend in Lake Chapala, a seven-hour drive away from Mazatlán, invited me to visit. Part of the allure, for me, of the Lake Chapala area is that it's quite rural. Mickey TodiwalaI hang my laundry to dry on the patio or roof, which could easily be turned into a more usable space. There's a Walmart and a Soriana grocery store nearby, but I prefer to shop at smaller local stores and at the many weekly outdoor markets.

AdvertisementYet when and how ICE agents use deadly force has long been shrouded in secrecy. ICE agents shot people in public places, such as traffic intersections and strip-mall parking lots. Yet in over half of the shootings we identified, ICE agents never made an arrest. But Ramos still became one of dozens of people on the receiving end of an ICE agent's deadly force. A significant number of the shootings documented in the logs happened while ICE agents were off-duty or in plain clothes.

She moved away in advance of the April 8 total solar eclipse. The resort town of Mazatlán, Mexico — where I lived from 2006 until last month — is one of the best spots to witness the total solar eclipse on April 8. A chance to make $300 a night for a weekRumors started circulating roughly three years ago about people renting their places for inflated prices during the eclipse week. One local friend's family charged up to four times the regular rates for their 10 vacation rental condos for the eclipse week. They told me they were offered $400 a night for the eclipse week.

Having fun doing what you love — like surfing at Los Pinos, my favorite break in Mazatlán, Mexico — is one of the greatest pleasures of retirement. I'd been a journalist in California, so I started an English-language magazine and published it monthly for a decade. But being retired presents a new, unexpected set of challenges, too. It really doesn't matter, and I do such a small amount of freelance work that those deadlines are easy to meet. At times, I feel desperate or determined to do at least some of the things I've always wanted to do.

So for 2024, I've resolved to acknowledge and congratulate myself for things I did in the past. I'm not perfect and I certainly have some regrets, but I'm proud of the person I've become. Here are three things I'm so glad I did in my 20s and 30s:1. I'm certainly not perfect, but I'm proud of the person I've become. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I loved my body and rejoiced in it.

This kind of reflection can elicit some regrets, but it also produces valuable insights that I can apply to my life now. While I'm happily retired, here are three things I really regret doing in my 20s — and my best advice for growing up with a more positive mindset:1. I worked multiple jobs trying to make ends meet, but they left me tired, scattered, and not always the best company.

In theory, retirement — with no work and all that free time — sounds like a dream. What the early years of retirement is really likeAfter I stopped working, my circle of friends and the community I'd established over the years seemed to shrink. "Up until now, you didn't have time to really consider how you want to spend the rest of your life. Research says we need meaningful purpose to feel satisfied in life, and without work, many retirees struggle to find that. I'm lucky that I still do a little freelance work, which makes me feel productive and connected.
Durham's following on the social platform and her success show how influencers and content creators on TikTok can strengthen a company's recruiting efforts. TikTok influencers help recruit desired candidatesWhen you think about how people previously searched for jobs, it's most likely they turned first to their local newspaper for open roles. Finding the right type of TikTok influencerLazarus said companies interested in using TikTok influencers to promote jobs, must first distinguish between the different types of influencers and which ones have the right following to reach ideal candidates. Blaser said companies, especially local businesses, don't necessarily need to tap into influencers with millions of followers to recruit for open jobs. Lazarus said TikTok influencers can also help companies increase diversity and reach underrepresented populations, because this type of recruitment reaches candidates through their trusted sources that they're already consuming.
Even though I've lived in Mazatlán, Mexico for 15 years, I still find myself surprised at how much — or, really, how little — things cost. As a single, 66-year-old retiree living largely off Social Security checks, I have to watch what I spend. But in Mexico, I pay just $420 per month for an apartment half a block from the beach. And aside from the basic necessities, I spend an average of $160 a month on things like eating out, entertainment, and the occasional whimsical purchase. In a country where the minimum wage is the equivalent of $8 to $12 per day, here's what you can buy for $5 or less:

I slip into my flip-flops, and coffee in hand, walk half a block to the beach to check out the waves. Being right on the Tropic of Cancer, the blue sky is gorgeous practically every day of the year! Joggers, dog-walkers, cyclists, fishermen, surfers and others all take advantage of the cool morning air before the sun comes up. Paola, the barista at my favorite coffee shop, starts my iced Americano as soon as she sees me. Janet Blaser moved to Mazatlán, Mexico in 2006, after falling in love with the beach town during a vacationMore than a decade has passed since I moved to Mazatlán, Mexico from California and retired. Once the honeymoon period is over, here are some downsides of leaving the U.S. for a beach town in Mexico:1. Unbelievably high noise levelsIf you've been to Mexico, you know that noise levels are often through the roof. Some, yes, but there will still be many, many things you'll miss. In many Mexican towns, city water (e.g.
