CNN —Joey Logano took home his third career NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona on Sunday. With the win, Logano becomes the 10th driver in NASCAR history to win three or more titles. An exuberant Logano told the NBC broadcast after the race, “I love the playoffs, I love it, man.”“What a race, what a Team Penske battle there at the end,” Logano continued. A week later, Logano won at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Round of 8 to clinch his spot in the championship race. Team Penske’s recent dominance continued as Logano’s win gives the team its third consecutive title after Blaney won last year.

That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The playoff beard had been shaved off well before fresh-faced Ryan Blaney arrived in Nashville to celebrate his first NASCAR championship. That's a bit fitting, though, as Blaney this year also contributed to two new marks on Penske's impressive motorsports resume. Then you've got to gel with a team.”The breakthrough came in 2017 at Pocono when Blaney beat Kevin Harvick for his first Cup win for Penske. “He won the race at Pocono, it's ironic, racing Harvick and Harvick is retiring now and Blaney is now champion,” Penske said. There was Chase Elliott, one of his best friends, who won the 2020 Cup title and is NASCAR’s five-time reigning most popular driver. And what of William Byron, who only needed half the time to pass Blaney in career wins? CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR on Monday rescinded Ryan Blaney's disqualification at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when series officials found a problem with the template used during post-race inspection. The reversal restored Blaney's sixth-place finish from Sunday's race, which had been stripped hours after the checkered flag for an alleged illegal front shock on his Ford. PHOENIX (AP) — A judge ruled Wednesday that Phoenix must permanently clear the city’s largest homeless encampment by Nov. 4. City officials began shutting down the homeless encampment known as “The Zone” in May under an order by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Scott Blaney, but they had asked to be given until April 2024 to complete the job. Justin Pierce, a lawyer representing the city, said in July that parts of the encampment on the edge of downtown Phoenix have been cleared since a judge declared the area to be a public nuisance, but other blocks still need to be addressed. Pierce added that the process takes time, including making sure those who live there have somewhere else to go. Denny Hamlin didn't chill Sunday with his bravado that this is indeed the year he will finally win a NASCAR championship. The day after his win at Bristol Motor Speedway hurdled Hamlin and his No. 11 team into the second round of NASCAR's playoffs, Hamlin was still pumping his chest. Hamlin shared a back-and-forth with the crowd, and that's when he first declared that this is, finally, his year. Hamlin only got the win in Bristol but was strong enough to sweep the opening two races, won by Larson and Reddick.

It’s an existence,” Shina Sepulveda, who is homeless and lives in the Zone, told The New York Times recently. City leaders across the West have grappled with how to handle homeless camps when they do not have enough space at shelters or in supportive housing. Patience has worn thin in some communities with significant homeless populations, and residents and business owners have asked their city officials to do more to move people off the streets. BackgroundThe number of unsheltered Phoenix residents has risen dramatically, from 771 in 2014 to 3,096 in 2022, according to the city. The city contended that it had discretion over how to address homelessness, including how best to move people out of camps.
