A Spirit Airlines flight to Haiti was hit by gunfire on Monday, injuring a flight attendant, as the State Department warned of "gang-led efforts" to stop travel to the country. Spirit released a statement confirming that one of its flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was diverted to the Dominican Republic on Monday. "One Flight Attendant on board reported minor injuries and is being evaluated by medical personnel," the statement said. Travel to Haiti, which is still in the midst of violent political turmoil, is not advised by the State Department. "Only attempt to depart Haiti or travel within Haiti if you believe it is safe for you to do so."

A Turkish Airlines pilot died mid-flight, forcing the co-pilot into an emergency landing in New York City on Wednesday morning, authorities said. Flight 8JK landed safely shortly before 6 a.m at John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to an FAA statement. Pilot İlçehin Pehlivan, 59, "fainted during the flight" and when "medical intervention to our captain on the plane was ineffective," the co-pilot opted to land, according to a statement from Turkish Airlines. Unfortunately, "our captain lost his life before landing," according to the airline. Video showed flames coming from underneath a Frontier flight that made a hard landing in Las Vegas after reports of smoke in the cockpit Saturday, officials said. Flight 1326 was on its way from San Diego to Las Vegas when "the pilots detected smoke and declared an emergency," Frontier said in a statement. There were reports of smoke in the cockpit before the Airbus 321 was able to make an emergency landing at Harry Reid International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Passengers said a pressurization issue on a Delta Air Lines flight Sunday left them with bloody noses and ears. A spokesperson for the airline company said that Flight 1203 from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon, was unable to pressurize above 10,000 feet. Passenger Jaci Purser told NBC affiliate KSL-TV of Salt Lake City that she felt her ear pop and then bubble because of the pressure in the cabin. It's not clear what caused the pressurization issue but Delta technicians were able to fix it. The plane was briefly taken out of service Sunday morning and went back into service the following day, Delta said.

An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. Damaged tires on the Alaska Airlines jet at the Nashville, Tenn., airport after takeoff was aborted Thursday. It said it sent another plane to Nashville to take them to Seattle on Thursday night.

A Delta aircraft clipped the tail of another plane Tuesday morning at an Atlanta airport. AP —Firefighters found a dead woman entangled in machinery Thursday in a non-public baggage-processing area at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Larry Langford, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the airport around 7:45 a.m. for a report of a person pinned in machinery used to move baggage. He said they discovered the woman entangled in a conveyer belt system in a baggage room. The baggage room wasn’t publicly accessible, Langford said, and it’s not clear how she found her way into it. The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it has recently charged 78 people with $2.5 billion in separate health-care fraud and opioid abuse schemes. The defendants allegedly defrauded programs used to take care of elderly and disabled people, and in some cases used the ill-gotten money to buy exotic cars, jewelry, and yachts, the DOJ said. Among those charged are 11 defendants accused of submitting $2 billion in fraudulent claims through telemedicine, as well as 10 defendants charged in connection with fraudulent prescription drug claims. In all, prosecutors filed charges against people in 16 states in cases that were lodged or unsealed in the past two weeks as part of the coordinated crackdown. In the scheme cited by Garland, executives of supposed software and services companies submitted $1.9 billion in fraudulent claims to Medicare for items that were not eligible for reimbursement, according to the DOJ.
