Regenvanu said there was an urgent need for a response to climate change that was rooted in international law rather than politics. Mario Tama / Getty Images filesWhile advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice or World Court are not binding, they are legally and politically significant. Experts say the court’s eventual opinion on climate change will probably be cited in climate change-driven lawsuits in courts from Europe to Latin America and beyond. “As judges of the World Court, you possess the power ... to help us course correct and renew hope in humanity’s ability to address the greatest challenge of our time,” she said. Earlier on Monday, Germany also argued that the obligations of states with regard to climate change were established in the Paris climate agreement.

Picture twinkling lights reflected on the Danube River as you sail into port, steps away from the merriment of a festive Christmas market. European Christmas markets have been a tradition since the Middle Ages. There are thousands of Christmas markets in Europe. I had my first taste of European Christmas markets on Viking's Danube Christmas Delights, an eight-day river cruise that stops in six places — Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz, Krems, and Passau — in four countries. I visited two — one in Hviezdoslav Square and another in city's main square.

Morgan Stanley said Black Friday traffic provided further evidence that some retail names are outperforming their peers. Equity analyst Alex Straton said Black Friday proved to be a "powerful demand catalyst" as shoppers searched for the best deals online and in store. However, the analyst does have an idea of what stocks are currently on the top performers list from the softline retail cohort. Straton called Lululemon the "clear winner" within sportswear. Investors should be discerning when thinking about these retail winners and losers as stock plays.

Business Insider looked at the top goods the US imports from BRICS nations, including medicine, apparel, and electronics. Census Bureau trade data showed that in 2023, the BRICS nations together accounted for about $578 billion in imports to the US. India accounted for much of the imports when looking at the BRICS nations, excluding China. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil's president, proposed creating a common currency among the BRICS nations last year, which could help avoid US sanctions.

It’s also true, however, that sometimes they would like at least some employees to quit, and not just the underperformers whom they’d otherwise like to fire. When employers might welcome your leavingThere are a myriad reasons why an employer might push people to quit. It’s worth checking, too, if the employment laws in your state impose any other restrictions on the employer. … Poor management is not illegal,” said Brian Heller, an employee-side attorney and partner at Schwartz Perry & Heller in New York. The only leverage you have in this kind of situation is not to quit, since quitting is what your employer wants, Heller noted.

The data showed that an estimated 197 million people shopped during the five-day period from Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday, still indicating relatively robust spending patterns to kick off the holiday season, which this year is poised to revolve around consumers’ search for deals. Data released by Mastercard on Saturday showed that Americans were selective about what they bought and that they took advantage of discounts offered on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. But shoppers also spent more this year: almost 15 percent more online on Black Friday from the previous year, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures retail sales across all forms of payment. In-store sales were also up but more modestly, at 0.7 percent, for an overall increase of 3.4 percent. As a whole, consumer spending, the engine of the U.S. economy, has remained relatively robust.

Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks said on Monday that the pies were loaded and ready to be delivered to York Christmas Market when the van was stolen. “They probably didn’t bargain for the nearly ton of pies that is in the back of it (the van),” he added. South Korea's inflation rate climbed in November to 1.5% year on year, from a 45-month low in October, as the country grapples with a weakening Korean won and slowing exports. Last Thursday, South Korea's central bank unexpectedly cut rates by 25 basis points to 3%, marking the first time that the Bank of Korea had enacted two back-to-back cuts since 2009. South Korea narrowly avoided a technical recession in the third quarter, with GDP growing 0.1% quarter on quarter, according to the bank's advance estimates, following a contraction of 0.2% in the second quarter. South Korea's currency has weakened against the greenback over October and November, hitting a two-year high of 1,411.31 as tariff fears from the incoming Trump administration take hold. “Y.M.C.A.” singer and co-writer Victor Willis of the band Village People defended President-elect Donald Trump’s use of the song Monday on Facebook. Willis denied that the disco tune was intended as a “gay anthem,” saying he “knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays” when he wrote the lyrics. Willis said he wrote “Y.M.C.A.” based on what he knew about the worldwide youth organization at the time, particularly the YMCA branches in the urban areas of San Francisco. Willis said he has received more than 1,000 complaints about the use of “Y.M.C.A” at Trump’s campaign rallies. Data suggests the staple campaign moment drove the song up the charts, with search interest and listenership soaring on Election Day.
