CNN —Twenty-two-time grand slam singles champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s Laver Cup due to fitness concerns, the tournament announced on Thursday. “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal said in a statement. The Laver Cup has not announced who will replace Nadal to join Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe. Nadal announced in April that he would play in this year’s Laver Cup in Berlin and was still expected to play despite withdrawing from the US Open due to concerns about his fitness. This year, Nadal played in only seven tournaments including the French Open and the Olympics, but has failed to return to the form expected from the former world No.

Whatever comes next is unlikely to mirror the previous era, leaving men’s tennis in an unfamiliar position, shorn of its three biggest icons who transcended the court. Carlos Alcaraz has already won four grand slam titles at the age of 21. “There has to be a real recalibration … because I already see people talking, like, ‘Can Alcaraz catch Djokovic’s grand slam record?’” Rothenberg tells CNN Sport. Sinner became a brand ambassador for Gucci last year. The next generation of tennis players are even experimenting with jewelry: Russian player Andrey Rublev is known to layer several silver pendants, while Nick Kyrgios is rarely seen without his double hoop earrings. Permission for the highly-engineered moment was granted after a lengthy approval process involving the International Tennis Federation, Association of Tennis Professionals and Wimbledon. LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - Unseeded Russian Roman Safiullin reached his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final when he secured a shock 3-6 6-3 6-1 6-3 win over Denis Shapovalov at Wimbledon on Sunday. After the match was all square, Shapovalov committed two more double faults in a dismal start to the third set as Safiullin broke and then held to love for a 2-0 lead. Minutes later, Safiullin had a 4-1 double-break after yet another double fault from Shapovalov, the seventh of 11. He was quickly put out of his misery by the Russian, who broke and then closed out the victory on serve. The 41-year-old announced last week that the team event being played at London's O2 Arena would be his last. Federer cut a relaxed figure as he sat with his European team mates including 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and three-time major winner Andy Murray.
