“Absolutely everyone is calling,” Collinson told CNBC. “Firms are prepared,” SUNY Buffalo finance professor Veljko Fotak, one of the authors of the 2021 study, told CNBC. “The American people re-elected President Trump by a resounding margin giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. On Thursday, Steve Madden pledged to reduce its Chinese imports by 45% over the next year in anticipation of Trump’s tariff plans. There’s got to be some way to help companies like that,” Sorini of Sorini, Samet & Associates told CNBC.

In the days since President-elect Donald Trump won the presidential race, Nicole Bivens Collinson's phone has barely stopped ringing. Collinson, who helps lead the international trade and government relations division at the lobbying firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, said she is fielding "dozens and dozens and dozens" of calls from anxious U.S. companies looking to protect themselves from Trump's hardline tariff plans by finding loopholes and exemptions. "Absolutely everyone is calling," Collinson told CNBC. "Our members have been working on contingency plans since President Trump secured the nomination." New York CNN —The last three years have upended everything about the way we expect the economy to work. But the pandemic-era inflationary period played out unlike any other in history, and wealthy people made out like bandits. And that may be because the only real inflation we’ve seen in decades was a multi-year profit bonanza for them. And that has provided a permission structure for some wealthy Trump supporters to shrug their shoulders at his inflationary economic agenda. But it won’t be the same flavor of profit-driven inflation we’ve seen over the past three years.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected disbarred lawyer Michael Cohen’s last-ditch effort to revive a civil rights claim against his former boss Donald Trump. But constitutional claims against individual federal officials are notoriously difficult to bring as a result of a line of Supreme Court rulings. In a 2022 case called Egbert v. Boule, the Supreme Court effectively put “Bivens claims” on life support in a ruling that tossed out allegations against a Border Patrol agent. A federal judge in New York and the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals both highlighted the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in throwing out Cohen’s claims. Unless Congress passes legislation to allow a form of Bivens claims, there are few legal avenues to seeking accountability when federal officials, including thousands of law enforcement officials, commit unlawful acts.

WASHINGTON — Michael Cohen is an unlikely civil rights warrior. Where Cohen, now a voluble Trump critic, aligns with civil rights advocates is on trying to turn the tide on the Supreme Court’s hostility to claims against federal officials for constitutional violations. Cohen also faces an unlikely alliance opposing his request: Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The current president’s Justice Department has filed a brief agreeing with the former president that the Supreme Court should not get involved. In Trump’s brief, his lawyer Alina Habba wrote that lower courts “faithfully applied” Supreme Court precedent in ruling against Cohen.

Between 1979 and 2024, productivity in the U.S. soared by 80.9%, while hourly pay grew by just 29.4%, according to research by the Economic Policy Institute. But more recently, some economists have suggested that deliberate policy decisions have actively suppressed workers' wage growth. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the natural rate of unemployment has hovered between 4.5% and 5.5% throughout history. But since 1979, the U.S. has spent far more time with actual unemployment well above that estimated natural rate. Watch the video above to find out how middle-class wages are being suppressed.

Now, trade economists say Trump's latest trade threat makes no sense. I love the company, but as you know, they've announced a few days ago that they're going to move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico," Trump said at Monday's event. AdvertisementJohn Deere is the latest company to face a threat of tariffs from Donald Trump. It's not the first time Trump has threatened companies and Trump's threat to impose large tariffs on imports also isn't new. Trump's tariff goals going into the next election go beyond his former policy on international imports.

But think-tank economists warned Business Insider that former President Donald Trump's proposed mass deportation could open that door right back up. Beyond posing significant humanitarian concerns, economists worry Trump's proposed mass deportation would be hugely inflationary, partly due to the basic calculations of supply and demand. Both he and Edelberg said a sudden mass deportation would upend the labor supply and, in turn, the ability to make goods. McKibbin has researched the impact of mass deportation and said it would lead to a combination of lower production and higher costs, particularly in the agriculture and construction sectors. Add on the uncertainty that mass deportation would bring, and a chilling effect among investors seems plausible.

Opinion: Our possibly short national nightmare

“My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,” President Gerald Ford said. “Our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden nightmare,” the former UN ambassador said. If not, it won’t be as protracted a “national nightmare” as the two-year-long Watergate scandal that put Gerald Ford in the Oval Office. Though, depending on your point of view, the real nightmare could begin after the swearing-in. Yet, John Avlon wrote, Trump and some members of the House GOP, want to tank an emerging compromise in the Senate that would couple border security measures with aid to Ukraine.

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — Authorities are seeking suspects in a shooting that killed one man and wounded eight other people at a private party in a Pennsylvania community center. State police in Indiana County said nine people between the ages of 18 and 23 were shot at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday at the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh. The shooting was about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which was having its homecoming weekend. Dozens of people, including some university students, attended a vigil Sunday night on the steps of the county courthouse, about a mile away from the community center, The (Johnstown) Tribune-Democrat reported. The percentage of Black workers in the auto industry today is more than double their share of the workforce overall. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Hard-won gains disappearSoon after Black auto workers broke into better paying jobs, the US auto industry began its long decline, decimating Black communities in particular.

CNN —The convicted murderer who escaped a Pennsylvania prison late last month is once again behind bars, now facing additional charges, after a nearly two-week manhunt that captured national attention and put the surrounding community on edge. Officers escort Danilo Cavalcante from a Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Avondale on Wednesday. “He said the law enforcement presence where he was, was immense and he felt that he needed to leave,” Clark said. “Three times, he described that law enforcement officials almost stepped on him within 7 or 8 yards,” Clark said. Prosecutors say Cavalcante stabbed Brandão 38 times in front of her two young children in Pennsylvania in April 2021.

Police Captured an Escaped Killer in Pennsylvania
  + stars: | 2023-09-13 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison and spent two weeks hiding in woods and fields was captured this morning, ending an extensive manhunt through Philadelphia’s western suburbs. The fugitive, Danelo Cavalcante, was apprehended after an alarm went off at a house in a wooded area of Chester County. A federal law enforcement aircraft, which was involved in the search, detected a nearby “heat signal,” and closed in on Cavalcante in a wooded area about 15 miles north of Chester County Prison, which he had escaped from on Aug. 31. “They had the element of surprise,” Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said. “Cavalcante did not realize he was surrounded.”Cavalcante tried to crawl away through thick underbrush with his stolen rifle, Bivens said, but a federal agent released a dog, which chased and “subdued” him, and left him with a “minor bite wound.” The officers moved in and Cavalcante, though still resisting, was taken into custody with no shots fired.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A group photo of about two dozen law officers in tactical gear posing with escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante minutes after his capture Wednesday in southeastern Pennsylvania drew criticism from policing reform advocates and some members of the public. Policing experts said the celebratory moment after the grueling 14-day search for the armed suspect was inappropriate and dehumanizing. Photos of Cavalcante immediately after being arrested, with the police dog pinning him down, circulated widely on social media Wednesday in the hours after the arrest was announced. The photos did not include information about who took them, but they were taken inside the secured perimeter where only law enforcement officers were allowed. If I was on the scene as the public affairs officer representing a law enforcement agency, I would have discouraged it.”

Cavalcante was captured in Chester County, swarmed by at least 20 law enforcement officers, Bivens said. Yoda joined the search from the US Border Patrol Tactical Unit stationed out of Michigan, Clark told CNN. The tactical teams made the decision to deploy Yoda – knowing Cavalcante was armed – before upgrading to deadly force, according to Clark. Yoda is a “bite and hold” police dog, Clark said, trained to hold down an individual until commanded to release the hold. “Our nightmare is finally over and the good guys won,” Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said Wednesday. The theft and shooting ultimately may have been a turning point in the intense search by hundreds of law enforcement officers. About 500 law enforcement officers – including the Pennsylvania State Police, FBI, ATF, and the US Marshals – searched the area of the shooting. Hundreds of state and local police along with federal agents have joined a manhunt for Danelo Cavalcante that began Aug. 31, when the 34-year-old Brazilian broke out of the Chester County Prison, about 30 miles (50 km) west of Philadelphia. Overnight, Cavalcante entered a garage in Chester County, where he grabbed a 22-caliber rifle before he fled as the homeowner fired several shots at him with a pistol, said Pennsylvania State Police Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens during a Tuesday news briefing. Cavalcante shed the sweatshirt he was seen wearing on security cameras and was now believed to be shirtless, Bivens said. There have been multiple sightings of Cavalcante who has stolen a vehicle and has attempted to contact several people for help. Cavalcante is also a suspect in a 2017 murder in Brazil, according to the U.S.
