AdvertisementTrump wants the power to refuse to spend federal dollars that Congress has already approved. Impoundment has been floated as one way that Trump could singlehandedly enact DOGE's recommended cuts to the federal budget. Meanwhile, lawmakers on Capitol Hill — including those on the House and Senate Appropriations Committees that control government spending — don't seem concerned about Trump's impoundment power grab just yet. He added that there "would be a problem" if Trump tried to impound funding approved by both chambers of Congress. AdvertisementWhat Trump could do with such sweeping powersEven if Congress won't grant Trump impoundment powers, he has another potentially more attractive avenue — the courts.

CNN —Social Security is by far one of the most popular government programs in the United States because it is critical for so many retirees’ financial security. More than half of non-retired US adults (53%) overall said they expect they will need to use Social Security to pay for necessary expenses, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Social Security benefits only replace a portion of Americans’ pre-retirement income. Indeed, only 31% of the non-retired adults surveyed said they are not planning to rely on Social Security benefits in retirement, with just 14% saying they will “not (be) at all” reliant on them. Their “normal retirement age” is 67 for the purposes of collecting Social Security benefits.

After stalling for three sessions, the greenback was back on the march higher, with investors lifting the dollar index measure against its key rivals closer to a one-year high of 107.07 hit last week. The dollar has rallied more than 2% since the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election on bets Trump's policies could reignite inflation and temper the Fed's future rate cuts. The dollar index held steady at 106.56, up from a one-week nadir hit in the previous session. "The Russia-Ukraine conflict is heating up, which is further denting sentiment towards the euro alongside the prospects of trade tariffs," another "bullish cue" for the dollar index given the euro's heavy weighting, City Index's Simpson said. The dollar gave up some gains against the yen, down 0.33% at 154.91 yen , although the Japanese currency remained under pressure.

The regions said that they're planning to redirect funds to the war in Ukraine instead, per reports. The governments of several Russian regions have decided not to hold New Year's parties, with many proposing to allocate savings to funding the war in Ukraine, according to multiple reports. The Buryatia region's Telegram account proposed using the saved funds for those participating in the war, and encouraged others to do the same. There are signs that Russia's public sector is under strain, with large layoffs planned in 2025.

Bitcoin was trading at about $97,000 on Thursday morning, after setting a fresh record high of $98,367.00, according to Coin Metrics. The crypto community is levered to the gills, and so there will be a correction," Novogratz said. He did caution that the correction could be greater in stocks, like MicroStrategy , that are trading like leveraged versions of bitcoin. "I personally would tell my investors to buy straight bitcoin" instead of plays like Microstrategy, Novogratz said. The rally has continued despite a mystery seller that has been dumping crypto in recent days, Novogratz said.

Goldman Sachs' list of top-performing longs in hedge funds has seen outsized gains in 2024, a sign that moves made by these firms have paid off this year. The bank's so-called very important positions, or "VIP," list has climbed about 30% year to date. Goldman strategist Ben Snider noted that hedge funds shifted somewhat to cyclical industrials from defensives in the third quarter, allowing them to benefit from the postelection rally. Goldman has a running list of its very important stock picks within hedge fund long holdings. However, most analysts surveyed by LSEG rate the stock a buy or strong buy, consensus price targets suggests shares may drop more than 23%.

He wrote all the clues one needs to find these treasure chests into a book, "There's Treasure Inside." The board of Acurx Pharmaceuticals approved Wednesday the purchase of up to $1 million in bitcoin to hold as a treasury reserve asset. "This new treasury strategy is a finance strategy and has no impact on our overarching drug development plans." On an X spaces event Tuesday evening, MicroStrategy Chairman and bitcoin evangelist Michael Saylor said he plans to pitch the board of Microsoft in December on his bitcoin treasury strategy. The theme has broadened to the government level this year, with Sen. Cynthia Lummis proposing a national strategic bitcoin reserve this summer. President-elect Trump similarly made mention of a potential national bitcoin stockpile in the same week.

It is effectively an unregulated, offshore bank that’s become a tent pole of the $3 trillion crypto industry. The tether token is known as a stablecoin, a kind of crypto that was created to hold its value steady while others, like bitcoin and ether, swing wildly minute to minute. The company is now one of the biggest players in crypto, with a daily trading volume that eclipses even bitcoin, the world’s most popular token. Tether told the WSJ in a statement that any suggestion it was involved in criminal activity was “outrageous” and that the company works actively with law enforcement to combat illicit activity. But Lutnick, a Bitcoin enthusiast whose Wall Street firm manages Tether’s stockpile of Treasury bills, has eagerly defended the stablecoin issuer.
