He wrote all the clues one needs to find these treasure chests into a book, "There's Treasure Inside." AdvertisementAll five treasure chests are also puzzle boxes, Collins-Black said — but if one finds the chest, instructions are placed with it outlining how to open the boxes, so people don't have to destroy them. "I don't have this desire for me to be long gone, and they're to be the 'Legend of the John Collins-Black treasures,'" he said.

Pinpointing exactly who sends a cryptocurrency payment can be complicated by the relative anonymity that some crypto services offer. The ransom payment of $25 million hasn’t been previously reported. A $25 million ransom payment is certainly large but not unheard of in the lucrative ransomware economy. Retail traders appear to be using a new tool during this huge rally for bitcoin — exchange-traded funds. The funds, which launched last month, have seen their trading volume surge this week as bitcoin continues to climb. That is well above its previous record high of roughly 43 million shares, which came on Tuesday. The highly active market around these funds is likely a sign that retail traders are using the ETFs to participate in the bitcoin rally. The trading volume is even more impressive when considering the price.

Exchange-traded funds come in many shapes and sizes. Some are plain vanilla, diversified index funds that let you invest in the entire stock and bond markets, and are excellent core holdings for the great majority of people. Then there are the quirky, narrowly focused E.T.F.s like the Inverse Cramer Tracker, which enables you to bet against the stock picks of the CNBC television host Jim Cramer. The fund is legal, approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission — and a money-loser since its inception last year. Betting against Jim Cramer just isn’t a great investing strategy.

Meanwhile, there is growing excitement that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will approve the first ever bitcoin ETF, after years of opposition. With all of this excitement comes some quite bold predictions about bitcoin's price. "No rationale for that prediction," Mobius said, except that a bitcoin ETF looks likely and "that has heightened interest" in the cryptocurrency. Yang attributes the anticipated price rise to a bitcoin ETF being approved, leading to higher institutional investment in bitcoin, as well as May 2024's bitcoin halving, which would result in the bitcoin supply being constrained. Alexander told CNBC that during the first quarter of 2024, bitcoin will trade within the $40,000 to $55,000 range, owing to "professional traders creating volatility."
