Bill Nye the CNNThe massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy, a science educator and engineer. In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected. “The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity." He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

In today's big story, we're looking at why the rate cuts investors have been praying for might not be the godsend they imagined. But rate cuts won't necessarily be the win markets are hoping for, Business Insider's Jennifer Sor writes. Still, some interest rate traders are predicting rate cuts coming as soon as this March, according to CME's FedWatch Tool. Another key piece of the economy facing headwinds complicates the case for rate cuts being a boon for investors.

Science communicator Bill Nye’s remark that “we cannot leave the Earth” referred to disposal of the planet’s trash, not - as online posts taking his words out of context suggest - that human space travel is impossible. In the shortened video clip, Nye, CEO of the Planetary Society, says that the Earth is a “closed system,” adding that “we cannot leave the Earth.”“There’s no place to go. The student asked Nye about the ethical and practical implications of shooting trash into space to avoid putting it in landfills (timestamp 2.22s). Nye first answers that it would be “too expensive,” adding that the Earth is a “closed system” in the context of handling trash. Nye was responding to a question about why humans do not shoot trash into space; he was not suggesting that space travel is impossible.

You may not know this, but Bill Nye, "The Science Guy," has professional experience overseeing new and potentially dangerous innovations. Still, computer science is not the skill that Nye thinks is the most important for students to learn. We don't want a smaller and smaller fraction of people understanding a more complex world," Nye said. During the conversation with CNBC's Tyler Mathisen at the TEC Summit on AI, CNBC surprised Nye with a series of questions that came from a prompt given to the Google generative AI Bard: What should we ask Bill Nye about AI? Watch the video above to see all of Bill Nye's answers to the AI about how it can help save the world.

The founder of outdoor apparel maker Patagonia is donating his company to a greater cause: fighting climate change. Yvon Chouinard, the rock climber-turned-billionaire, and his family have transferred their ownership of Patagonia to the newly created Patagonia Purpose Trust and nonprofit Holdfast Collective. The company, which Chouinard founded in 1973, is worth $3 billion, according to the New York Times. "The Patagonia Purpose Trust ... exists to create a more permanent legal structure to enshrine Patagonia's purpose and values," the announcement reads. "Despite its immensity, the Earth's resources are not infinite, and it's clear we've exceeded its limits," Chouinard wrote on Wednesday.
"It helped us pay the staff, the rent, the insurance and keep the lights on," Books & Greetings owner Kenny Sarfin said. Campaign committees are increasingly making bulk book purchases, which help juice sales numbers and propel politicos' writings onto bestseller lists. The sale follows an earlier $400,000 order of Crenshaw's book by the National Republican Campaign Committee, Politico first reported. The Trump campaign did not reply to several request for comment. While political-committee book purchases are en vogue, it's rare for Republicans — or Democrats — to purchase so many from a mom-and-pop operation.
