To end the Olympics she once thought would never happen for her, Simone Biles began her floor exercise routine on Monday and did what she was made to do: flip and twist and thrill an arena filled with people there to watch her. Every time Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, landed one of her wildly difficult tumbling passes, the crowd seemed to shout, “Wow!” all at once. And when she was done, standing alone on the floor in her sparkly leotard, the spectators rose to honor her — perhaps as much for her entire career as for a brilliant but flawed floor routine. Biles stepped out of bounds twice during the routine, which was by far the most difficult that any of the finalists attempted. When Chiles’s bronze medal was announced, she cried — and Biles smiled and laughed while hugging her.

Simone Biles entered the 2020 Olympic Games with a record 25 World Championship medals and four moves so difficult that she alone out of all the world’s gymnasts could perform them. But what took place on the competition floor made history in a way no one could have expected. Simone had “the twisties” — a complete loss of ability to perceive her body in space. I’m a former competitive gymnast myself (though let’s be clear — Simone and I occupy entirely different stratospheres). By the time he was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison, over 200 gymnasts had spoken up, and Simone was one of them.

It did not look like Simone Biles had been gone. Her full-twisting double-back dismount from the balance beam, hastily scrapped the last time she was seen in competition two years ago, was back. Oh, and yes: She finished the competition with a Yurchenko double pike, a vault not contemplated, much less competed, before Biles introduced it in 2021. The margin — 5 points over the second-place finisher, Leanne Wong — was normal by Biles’s standards, which are not anybody else’s. That margin between first and second was about the same as the margin between second and 17th.

Star gymnast Simone Biles and the embattled telehealth provider Cerebral Inc. have parted ways, the company said, after announcing a partnership last year that sought to use Ms. Biles’s mental health advocacy to power growth at the startup. Ms. Biles, who became a widely discussed mental-health symbol after her stunning mid-event withdrawal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, had been unveiled in October 2021 as the “chief impact officer” for Cerebral. The company provides online access to therapists and prescribers for mental health treatment. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
