Solo travel is my secret to a healthy marriage. Solo travel allows me to slow down and remove the power that life's demands can have. When I travel solo, I am forced to sit with myself and examine things that are boiling under the surface. It could also be said that we have both developed new love languages thanks to solo travel; it has created new ways for us to connect. Rather than fend off questions like my coworker's, I smile to myself because solo travel is my secret to a happy marriage.

As food inflation rose over the last few years, companies like PepsiCo have been able to push through price increases to retailers and consumers — and then some. Food inflation has increased at a steady pace over the last few months. While PepsiCo is one of the largest food manufacturers in the world, it's far from alone in hiking prices. McMullen told investors last month he expects more discounts coming from national brands this year. Of course, national brands have been bragging about strong profits in recent years, which would suggest they're now in a position to offer discounts and promotions without breaking the bank.

Cold Stone Creamery is facing legal action over 'pistachio' ice cream that contains no pistachios. AdvertisementThe parent company of Cold Stone Creamery is facing legal action after a New York woman ordered "pistachio" ice cream only to discover that it didn't contain pistachios. It all started when the plaintiff visited a Cold Stone Creamery in Levittown, Long Island, in July 2022, ordering what she believed was a pistachio ice cream. The plaintiff's lawyers argued that had she been aware of this, she wouldn't have bought the ice cream. Related storiesIn the ruling, the plaintiff compared Cold Stone Creamy's pistachio ice cream to offerings from Häagen-Dazs and Ben and Jerry's, both of which contained real pistachios.

“If they switch to different types of nutrients … we switch to different types of nutrients,” he said. Drugs like Ozempic could change how people eat, affecting food sellers. Big food companies are constantly evolving their products to adapt to consumer trends. And with wellness top of mind for many — not just people taking semaglutide drugs — companies have already tweaked their products in an effort to appeal to health-conscious consumers. “And then what is the churn rate?” To adapt to a possible shift, companies should be “planning for different scenarios,” she said.

But food companies' major bets on snacking come as investors fear the looming danger of Big Pharma's blockbuster obesity and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic. Younger generations snack more often than older consumers, said Kelsey Olsen, food and drink analyst for market research firm Mintel. Millennials and Gen-Z consumers tend to eat smaller meals that are closer together, creating more occasions to grab a snack. At the same time, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy have taken off, fueled by prescriptions to help patients lose weight. Some patients even report developing aversions to foods with higher sugar and fat content — a category that includes many big snack brands.

But major food companies, from Nestlé to Unilever, increased prices much more than that. The world's biggest food companies spent the first half of this year raising prices, according to several earnings reports released this week. Some external factors have impacted the costs that major food companies pay to produce their products. It's especially easy for global food companies to raise prices, given that a few companies own most of the brands in many US grocery stores. But there's some evidence that consumers aren't willing to put up with higher food prices indefinitely.

Why, when we think of climate change, do we think of big oil, not big ag; Exxon and not Tyson? It’s time you met the big ag lobby, one of the most powerful influences on policy in America. But when we started digging into the big ag lobby, we discovered it’s basically — “The most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. So the big ag lobby has one key aim — block environmental regulation. While food inflation has become a concern for European governments from Britain to Italy recently, France has been among the most aggressive in pushing price cuts. In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has imposed mandatory price cuts on some basic food items. But food prices still were up 14% last month after a record spike of almost 16% in March. Food prices surged after food companies and big retailers agreed in March to an average 10% increase in prices, responding to a surge in input prices the previous year and wages after Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the food industry has seen profits surge, largely making up for sharp falls during the pandemic, Le Maire said.

Big food manufacturers like Kraft Heinz (KHC.O) and Unilever (ULVR.L) are ratcheting down the price rises they have been inflicting onto supermarket chains. If food retailers can convince cash-strapped customers to skimp less and pay more, their profit margins will finally start growing. Last week, the country’s food retailers opened negotiations on prices with manufacturers like Coca-Cola (KO.N) and Unilever as food inflation surged to over 15% in March. Food manufacturers can certainly do more. Meanwhile, food inflation remained high at 19.1% in April versus 19.2% in March.
From Twinkies to Doritos, Snacks Get Tiny

Big food is going small. Sometimes too small. Within the span of a few months last fall, General Mills Inc., Hostess Brands Inc. and PepsiCo Inc.’s Frito-Lay unveiled mini versions of their iconic snacks and cereals, including pee-wee Trix, Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Doritos. The diminutive treats kept coming this year, with the debut of mini wafers from Hostess’s Voortman and McCain Foods USA’s bite-size mashed-potato puffs for restaurants.
Hershey is debuting a chocolate bar and Reese's peanut butter cups that are plant-based. The candies use oat milk instead of dairy milk. It's the latest plant-based version of a packaged food as the term becomes over-used. The Hershey Co., which makes both of the candies, will start selling plant-based peanut butter cups this month, the company said Tuesday. The peanut butter cups will be the first vegan chocolates that the company has sold across the US, the company said.
An Air Fryer for sale at Kroger Marketplace in Versailles, Kentucky, U.S., on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020. Adam Graves, president of Nestle U.S.'s pizza and snacking division, said the company is leaning into the air fryer boom through its frozen food brands, specifically to offer customers more value. Other Nestle products, like Hot Pockets, now include air fryer cooking instructions alongside directions for heating up in the microwave and oven. Tyson is also a third of the way through adding air fryer directions to its packaging for its frozen prepared foods. The air fryer directions are boosting Tyson's brand favorability, according to Hall, who cited recent brand health data.
Those changes mean that food companies could no longer market white bread as well as sugary cereals and yogurt as "healthy," according to the FDA. Sources of omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, for example, would get the "healthy" designation because of potential health benefits from that type of fat. The revised definition of "healthy" isn't a requirement for food companies, according to the FDA. Even so, many food companies closely follow nonbinding FDA guidelines. Another set of proposed FDA guidelines for plant-based milks, for example, drew ire from the dairy industry this week.
Grocers like Kroger are gathering consumer data and selling it, The Markup reported. Kroger says that selling the data to advertisers could help it realize $1 billion in new profit. But the information, even without names attached, could violate customers' privacy. Both Kroger and Albertsons say that they give aggregate "de-identified" shopper data to their clients. Kroger, for instance, touts its data set on Hispanic consumers, among other "ethnic panels," on the website for its marketing arm.
