French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said a “very provisional” tally shows there are at least “a few people” who have died. France’s poorest island, Mayotte has previously struggled with drought and underinvestment. French Transport Minister François Durovray said Mayotte airport was “badly damaged, particularly the control tower” by the cyclone in a message on X. In Zimbabwe, authorities said some people should prepare for evacuation.
