But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition.
His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running.
And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her.
And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.
