Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off in the ABC presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024. The previous Trump administration didn't pursue those types of consumer protections. In contrast, Democrats, including Harris, have historically supported EVs and incentives such as those under the Biden administration's signature Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, Harris, if elected, can build on existing efforts of the Biden administration to deliver savings to more patients, they said. Trump also led multiple efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, including its expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults.

As market competition heated up, Tesla started cutting prices, which turned into an industrywide price war that Tesla isn't winning. It's a steep fall, considering Tesla's share of the EV market used to be as high as 80%. Critics balked, but Musk assured the Tesla community that this was the only strategy to save the company. Musk is looking for ways to buy time for Tesla — and one of those ways is to get Trump elected. Preserving Tesla's market position is imperative until he can conjure another product that people are excited to buy.

Win Mcnamee | Getty ImagesDETROIT – President Joe Biden's plan to quadruple tariffs on China-made electric vehicles is unlikely to stave off the threat of more Chinese cars and trucks on U.S. roadways. Automotive and trade experts say the increased tariffs are a near-term protectionism act that may delay, but won't stop, Chinese automakers from coming to the U.S. with EVs. The EV tariffs, including other increases regarding battery materials, were among new tariff rates on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports. The quality and build of vehicles by Chinese automakers have gotten significantly better in recent years, as the Chinese government has subsidized their operations to grow domestic production. GM and others have found it hard to compete against budget and mainstream Chinese vehicles, including EVs.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Wednesday lauded President Joe Biden's investment in electric vehicles for accelerating the sector, even as the industry cools off from its yearslong hot streak. Yellen touted Biden's EV actions in Kentucky at a new $49 million EV battery factory built by Advanced Nano Products, a battery supplier that will receive tax credits from Biden's Inflation Reduction Act for the new clean energy facility. "It's part of a boom in EV-related investments in Kentucky," Yellen said. "The Biden Administration's policies and federal funds are fueling private sector investments." The secretary's EV bullishness comes as the private sector tempers its mood on all-electric vehicles.

According to one recent poll, 50% of Democrats believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. While many Democrats who believe that may be willing to support Biden anyway, there's a sizeable portion who may decline to support Biden's reelection. In contrast to questions about Israel, top Democrats have quickly moved to dismiss questions about the special counsel report.

U.S. President Joe Biden joins striking members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) on the picket line outside the GM's Willow Run Distribution Center, in Bellville, Wayne County, Michigan, September 26, 2023. Democrat Biden traveled to a Belleville, Michigan, parts distribution center owned by General Motors (GM.N), and joined dozens of picketers outside. Auto company sources said Biden's support for a 40% pay hike may make it harder to reach a compromise with the UAW. Calling Biden's visit a "historic moment in time," Fain accused CEOs of taking the profits and leaving workers to "fight for scraps." Biden's Michigan visit represents the most support a sitting president has shown striking workers since Theodore Roosevelt invited striking coal workers to the White House in 1902, historians said.

While the Florida governor had acknowledged that human-induced climate change was real earlier in his career, he has since backed away from that position, a shift that was apparent on Wednesday. "We will unleash American energy dominance as a way to stop inflation and achieve $2 gas in 2025," DeSantis said on Wednesday. DeSantis' speech, which was meant to broadly lay out his energy policy, comes as his campaign is in need of a boost. In addition to expanding fossil fuel production, DeSantis called for significant investments in so-called critical minerals, including the creation of a Critical Mineral Strategic Reserve. DeSantis said he would seek to require plaintiffs to pay compensation when they bring spurious litigation against energy projects.

Taken as a whole, the plan represents a doubling down on pledges DeSantis and most of his Republican opponents have made on the campaign trail to jettison limits on fossil fuel production and consumption. While the Florida governor had acknowledged that human-induced climate change was real earlier in his career, he has since backed away from that position. The Florida governor has slid in the polls for months, and he now sits 37 points behind former President Donald Trump, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll. DeSantis' plan calls on pensions and government accounts to eliminate environmental, social or governance considerations, known as ESG, from consideration when making investment considerations, a plan which tracks closely with moves he made as Florida governor. In addition to expanding fossil fuel production, DeSantis' plan calls for significant investments in so-called critical minerals, including the creation of a Critical Mineral Strategic Reserve.

Behind that is the main conference room, known as the “JFK room." A room once taken up by computer servers has become a smaller conference room. That took place around the corner from the JFK room in a smaller conference room that no longer exists. While the area was closed for renovation, White House officials used other secure spots on the campus.

Biden's 2024 race will be different, aides and Democratic party officials say. The race to host the party convention is now down to two cities, sources say: Chicago and Atlanta. Chicago's pull is rooted in tradition, deep-pocketed donors and union ties, while Atlanta's appeal reflects the power of Georgia's grassroots networks and the importance to the party of Black voters and a racially diverse electorate. Top Democratic political officials in eight Midwestern states wrote Biden last week to push for a Chicago convention. CHICAGO, UNION TOWNHolding the convention in Chicago would put Biden in a Democratic powerhouse, where the party controls the legislature and executive branches.

The answer is simple, according to more than a dozen Washington insiders, FTX employees, and crypto industry observers who spoke with Insider. I don't think anyone believed that he was going to fund candidates who were, quote unquote, committed to ending pandemics who were also hostile to the crypto industry." Alex Wong/Getty ImagesRebuffed by the SEC, Bankman-Fried turned his attention to Congress. "It's not that he was welcoming regulation," says the senior figure in the crypto industry who attended meetings with Bankman-Fried. But while Bankman-Fried was busy wooing Washington, FTX was about to become Exhibit A in the case for more effective oversight of the crypto industry.
President Joe Biden last week doled out $2.8 billion to miners developing new U.S. sources of lithium, nickel, copper and other EV minerals, as well as battery parts manufacturers and recyclers. Those grants followed August's Inflation Reduction Act, which links EV tax credits to minerals extracted domestically or from 20 allies. "People have a misconception about how quickly we can get mines up and running given the U.S. permitting process," said Megan O'Connor, Nth Cycle's CEO. "Hopefully, they'll give us some help and fast track some of the permitting process," said Kent Masters, Albemarle's CEO. The yawning divide between America and China's approaches to funding the EV supply chain is now a top concern for many policymakers and their advisers in the nation's capital.
DEVENS, Mass., Sept 21 (Reuters) - The giant machines churning out metal parts on this factory floor do not bang or clang - or make any other noise usually associated with heavy-duty manufacturing. VulcanForms builds metal parts by layering on and fusing together materials bit by bit — rather than cutting them out of blocks of metal or stamping them out in metal foundries. The factory has made everything from medical implants and gun suppressors to tire molds and computer cooling devices. VulcanForms is unique among 3D printing companies in that it builds its own proprietary machines - which it will not sell to other producers - and uses them to make parts for its customers. The company is growing quickly, with plans to double the number of 3D printing machines at the Devens factory by the end of this year.
After helping Joe Biden win a grueling election, progressives want a say in key policies, like environmental protections, social justice, and immigration reform. Still, there are plenty of progressives — such as Sunrise Movement founder Varshini Prakash — who are ready to keep the pressure on the Biden administration from the outside. Against that backdrop, progressive lawmakers, media heavyweights and outside groups involved in everything from the environment to criminal justice reform say they will be watching Biden's every move. New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has given her stamp of approval to Biden's climate appointees: "I think Biden's climate appointments actually represent progress — real progress," she said. Here's Insider's list of 32 of the top progressives primed to help the Biden administration — or cause it headaches.
