The latter appeared to hint at the Germany's waning influence over regional policy — a likely unthinkable notion only a few years ago. Solid-state batteries have long been billed as the "holy grail" of sustainable driving. As the name suggests, solid-state batteries contain a solid electrolyte, made from materials such as ceramics. Automakers have invested billions of dollars in solid-state battery research and teamed up with developers to produce their own versions for mass production. Tomohiro Ohsumi | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesJapan's Toyota, for instance, has said it is aiming to bring solid-state batteries into mass production between 2027 and 2028. Yet, despite growing hype over the potential rollout of solid-state batteries, analysts remain skeptical about when they will actually make it to market.

Europe is clamping down on Chinese electric cars. European automakers are facing plunging EV sales and pressure over looming emissions targets. AdvertisementEurope is clamping down on Chinese electric cars — but the move to protect the continent's automakers could create a new problem for the likes of Volkswagen and BMW. The European Union voted to impose sweeping tariffs on Chinese EV makers on Friday as it seeks to protect its automotive industry from what the bloc claims are unfairly subsidized cheap Chinese electric vehicles. The European tariffs come after the US introduced its own trade restrictions against Chinese EVs earlier this year.

The Swedish automaker said it now aims for between 90% and 100% of its car sales to be fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2030. "I think a lot of manufacturers are obviously going through this process [of delaying electrification targets] at the moment. The U.K., for instance, introduced a mandate that requires 22% of new car sales this year to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Geely Holding, had been among the first legacy carmakers to promise a complete switch to EVs. The firm said its long-term aim remains to become a fully electric carmaker. The target replaces a 2021 pledge for Volvo Cars' lineup to be fully electric by the end of the decade. The specifics of student protesters’ divestment demands vary in scope from school to school. Other students, like those at Cornell University and Yale, are asking their schools to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. Other common threads include demanding universities disclose their investments, sever academic ties with Israeli universities and support a ceasefire in Gaza. Proponents for divestment counter that its value lies in raising awareness and stigmatizing partnerships with targeted regimes or industries.

For South Africa as a whole, three quarters of its vehicle production is exported. At the same time, South Africa's policy paper on EVs is two years behind schedule. "The train (EV shift) is a global one, and it's leaving the station. If South Africa doesn't jump onto the train, it runs the risk of being left behind," Mark Raine, co-CEO Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa, told Reuters in an interview. Specifically, South Africa will need to boost local demand by cutting the import tax for EVs, setting up large-scale EV charging stations and investing in skills needed for the new ecosystem that EVs bring, he said.

His comments came as the Mercedes-Benz Group reported earnings for the second quarter this week. Seven major automakers announced a plan on Wednesday to nearly double the number of fast chargers in the United States in an effort to address one of the main reasons that people hesitate to buy electric cars. The carmakers — BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Group and Stellantis — will initially invest at least $1 billion in a joint venture that will build 30,000 chargers on major highways and other locations in the United States and Canada. The United States has about 32,000 fast chargers — those that can replenish a drained battery in 10 to 30 minutes. Surveys show that fear about not being able to find a charger is a major reason that car buyers are reluctant to buy electric vehicles. Sales of electric vehicles have risen quickly in the United States, but there are signs that demand is softening.
