But it’s not just the massive scale of the event that makes it so important in the eyes of observers across the border in the United States. Key to facilitating this shift was the creation of the USMCA trade agreement, which came into effect in 2020 between Mexico, the United States and Canada. “Mexico committed to addressing the two main Mexican issues affecting the United States and that will determine the next election: migration and fentanyl. “But the United States also has to dismantle the network of traffickers within (its own borders). There is a significant network of organized crime in the United States that the administration must arrest, bring to trial, and whose activities it must restrict,” she added.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Peru's Attorney General Patricia Benavides plans to file a constitutional complaint against President Dina Boluarte over the deaths of protesters during months of unrest in the past year, Benavides said on Monday during a televised statement. It marks the attorney general's first charge before Congress against the president, following nearly a year-long investigation. The attorney general's office first announced in January it was launching a probe into Boluarte and members of her cabinet on charges of "genocide, qualified homicide and serious injuries." At least 40 individuals were killed during the violent clashes between December 2022 and the start of this year, and hundreds others were injured. Yet many of the protesters’ key demands, such as the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, early elections, and the closure of Congress, remain unanswered. Anger over accountability is what’s driving the new protests, Omar Coronel, a sociologist from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, told CNN. At the minimum, a democracy leads to “some kind of political sanction” for protest deaths. At least 24,000 police officers are being mobilized to watch what has been dubbed the “takeover of Lima” protest. What people want is to work and that the businesses and the economy not to come to a standstill,” political analyst Álvarez Rodrich said.

James Gathany/CDC/Handout/ReutersWhile serious mosquito-borne diseases remain rare in the US, other countries are not so lucky. While scientists are yet to assess the role climate change has played in the outbreak, Carlson said the links seem clear. But the shift of mosquito-borne diseases into regions like the US and Europe is still likely to be a shock. Scientists are working to develop tools to be able to better assess the link between mosquito-borne diseases and climate change. The path the world takes on reducing planet-heating pollution will lead to very different futures for mosquito-borne diseases, Brady said.

House Democrats this month said Trump failed to report over 100 gifts from foreign leaders. Listed among the gifts that were missing was a large portrait of Trump from El Salvador's president. He said he had seen the painting in October while attending a golf tournament at the Trump National Doral hotel in Miami, Florida. The Trump National Doral hotel and Trump's post-presidency office did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment. The report from House Democrats said, "the Trump Administration's failure to disclose more than one hundred foreign gifts President Trump and his family received raises new questions about whether these and other gifts may have been used by foreign governments to influence US policy under President Trump."
LIMA, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Peru's Congress passed a constitutional complaint on Friday against ousted former President Pedro Castillo for alleged corruption, a step towards a formal judicial charge. Castillo has been held in pre-trial detention in Lima since his abrupt Dec. 7 ouster and arrest after he tried to illegally shutter Congress to avoid impeachment over the corruption accusations, which he denies. Friday's complaint allows Attorney General Patricia Benavides to formally accuse Castillo before Peru's judiciary. During the congressional debate, Castillo, via his lawyer Eduardo Pachas, declined to present a defense, saying that he wanted to participate in person. Pachas only reiterated Castillo's denial of corruption and denial of the charge that he belonged to a criminal organization.
[1/3] People walk while carrying the coffin of a person who died in violent clashes earlier this week, ignited by the ouster of leftist President Pedro Castillo, in Juliaca, Peru January 11, 2023. The controversial ouster of leftist former President Pedro Castillo last month triggered the unrest, which has claimed the lives of at least 41 civilians and one police officer. Human rights groups accuse police and soldiers of using excessive force, including live ammunition and dropping tear gas from helicopters, while security forces say protesters, mostly in Peru's southern Andes, have used homemade weapons and explosives against them. Many of the angry and sometimes violent protests have played out in key southern mining regions, but on Thursday thousands marched through the streets of Lima demanding the closure of Congress and Boluarte's resignation. CNN —One week into her presidency, Peru’s new President Dina Boluarte is battling to contain widespread protests that erupted after the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo. Boluarte announced Tuesday the government will set up a crisis management committee as protests calling for political change continue across the country. Boluarte, his former vice president, has since become president, and on Monday proposed bringing general elections forward two years to April 2024 during a televised speech. At least seven people have died in the protests ongoing in Peru, according to a tweet from the health ministry on Wednesday. Boluarte also doesn’t belong to a political party after she was expelled from Peru Libre due to internal disagreements.
CNN —Peruvian lawmakers have voted to oust President Pedro Castillo, dramatically escalating Wednesday’s political crisis that began hours earlier when Castillo attempted to dissolve the legislative body and install an emergency government. A majority of 101 lawmakers in the 130-person congress later voted to impeach Castillo, with the body announcing that Vice President Dina Boluarte will be sworn in as the new President of Peru. Francisco Morales, the president of Peru’s Constitutional Court, urged Boluarte to assume the presidency in a speech prior to the congressional vote. Lawmakers stand inside Congress on the day of their planned impeachment vote on President Pedro Castillo in Lima, Peru, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022. The complaint allows congress to carry out its own investigation against the president.
David Cruz, a spokesman for LULAC — the oldest Latino civil rights group in the United States — said a woman who joined the meeting claiming to represent the organization was "terminated" Oct. 22 and met with Musk "unlawfully." Johnson wrote and signed the letter along with the leaders of the National Urban League and the National Action Network, two of the most prominent civil rights groups in the country. "Her meeting with Mr. Musk was wholly unauthorized and breached our agreements and repeated notifications. Ms. Benavides is, in fact, a rogue, former respected leader who has decided to place herself above the organization that trusted her," Cruz added. The Dallas Morning News has reported that two factions inside LULAC have been vying for power in recent months.

The candidates most targeted by political violence and threats tend to be Black women and LGBT people, especially trans women, said researcher Cesar Munoz of Human Rights Watch. "Attacks on trans candidates, especially threats against transfeminine identities are much more intense, violent and numerous than against any other candidate," said Benavides of Rio de Janeiro-based ANTRA. "Political parties often don't take these threats seriously, especially against trans women," Munoz said. Reuters interviewed eight trans and travesti candidates who reported threats and intimidation on the campaign trail.
