The total bill for ad spending in the 2024 election hit almost $11 billion, a new record and a substantial increase from the $9 billion spent in 2020. That's according to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political ad spending. The total is in line with the firm's 2023 projection that 2024 would see more ad spending than ever before. Overall, the Democratic campaign and pro-Democratic outside groups spent almost $1.8 billion, while the Trump campaign and pro-Republican outside groups spent $1.4 billion. A relatively short list of competitive gubernatorial races this election cycle drew almost $530 million, including races held in 2023.

Arizona voters approved a controversial ballot measure that will give state and local law enforcement greater authority to enforce immigration-related laws typically left to the federal government, NBC News projects. The lengthy ballot measure makes a number of changes to state law related to immigration. The measure also requires a court to kick out migrants convicted of illegal entry, allowing state and local law enforcement to deliver them to federal custody. While the ballot measure’s supporters have long argued for the need to make immigration law stricter, Republicans also hoped that the measure could help boost GOP turnout. And Arizona’s controversial attempt to enact stricter immigration laws in 2010 was partially blocked by the Supreme Court in part because the court found that federal immigration law pre-empted much of the legislation.

Jim Justice won the state’s open Senate seat Tuesday, NBC News projects, moving Republicans one step closer to flipping the balance of power in the chamber. Justice faced little competition from Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott, a Democrat, in a race that Republicans were heavily favored to win after the retirement of independent Sen. Joe Manchin, who left the Democratic Party in May. Justice won election as governor in 2016, the year Trump won the state by more than 42 percentage points. After months of publicly clashing with his party, Manchin announced he wouldn’t seek re-election. But Justice cruised to victory, defeating Mooney by 35 points in May, and faced little political opposition since.

Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. While Trump won it by 3 points in 2016, Biden won Maricopa by 2 points four years later. And that Democratic gain helped the party flip Wisconsin in 2020, given that Biden won the state by just 20,000 votes.

But then there are voters who say former President Donald Trump lacks the character or demeanor a president should have. And some specifically panned the the racist and demeaning rhetoric from Trump allies at last week's rally at Madison Square Garden, criticizing them for alienating Americans instead of bringing them together. Other voters derisively mentioned Harris' laughter, called Trump more "transparent in what he's looking to do," and cited their support for Trump economic policies like tariffs and not taxing overtime pay. It’s clearer than ever after months of close polling and years of intense polarization: Who wins the 2024 presidential election could come down to tiny differences in who votes and who stays home. But an analysis of the poll also shows how the composition of the electorate and small changes in who decides to vote could lead to small but important swings in the election. The more Democratic-leaning turnout universe is one that sees more women, nonwhite voters and higher-educated voters turning out, as well as those from the cities and suburbs. And the one favoring Republicans relies on the opposite: more white people, more men, more voters without college degrees and more from rural communities. But in the meantime, the analysis shows how small changes can have a big effect on a close election.

With Election Day around the corner, there's been just shy of $1 billion spent on political ads up and down the ballot in the last week, data from the ad-tracking firm AdImpact shows. The most expensive race over the last week is, unsurprisingly, the presidential race, where more than $272 million has been spent on ads, according to data from AdImpact. There's been more than $267 million spent on ads in down-ballot races, meaning all of the other races outside of races for president, governor and Congress. One other down-ballot race saw more than $10 million in ad spending over the last week: California's referendum on rent control. Governors races have had just $18 million in ad spending in the last week, thanks to a relative lack of competitive races this cycle.

The handful of Americans who have won $1 million checks from tech billionaire Elon Musk’s super PAC have a few things in common. He said he didn’t know the process the super PAC used to pick his name and didn’t ask. He said he believes Democrats are not ideologically predisposed to sign Musk’s petition in support of the First and Second Amendments. NBC News asked the super PAC to share the process Oct. 22 and did not receive a response. All 14 winners have either recorded videos for Musk’s super PAC, been photographed for the super PAC or both.

One other potential scenario looms this fall: the "contingent election" of the president and the vice president that would happen if no one can secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. That has not happened in the modern era, but there are a few conceivable (if unlikely) paths across the Electoral College map that could lead to former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris ending the race tied at 269 electoral votes. In the event of a tie, Congress would decide the next president. “Each state, regardless of population, casts a single vote for President in a contingent election,” according to the Congressional Research Service. Although Washington, D.C., has three electoral votes in the presidential election, it would not have a vote in the House in a contingent election because it is not a state.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers approved new measures in 2024 that would shorten the time needed for a potential recount. Kamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican Trump critics hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. “It’s repulsive,” said Dale J., a 67-year-old from Minnesota who voted for Trump in 2020 and plans to do so again. "I really liked the idea that Nikki Haley was a woman, and I thought she would have more closer values to mine than Trump. (One of these voters is a registered Democrat who voted in her state’s open presidential primary for Haley.) Only one voter, 40-year-old Chris P. from Michigan, backed Trump in 2020 and is considering voting for Harris now.

Among these voters, Harris gets a boost because they believe she would protect abortion rights, and some have broader hopes that electing the first female president could send a strong message to the country. Across the last three polls, Trump led Harris 50%-40% among those who were confirmed not to have voted in 2022 or 2020. On the panels, all three of the voters leaning Harris’ way were women who, in part, said they connected with her on an emotional level. She framed her vote as “less of a vote for her and more of a vote against Trump,” and she added that she never gave voting for Trump serious thought. She’s caught between a fear of choosing the wrong candidate and the “guilt” she feels after having sat out 2020.

Outside groups have poured an astounding $1.1 billion into the presidential race with less than two weeks to go before Election Day, an NBC News analysis found, surpassing the record set during the 2020 election. To put the current level of outside spending into perspective, the $1 billion-plus figure dwarfs the gross domestic product of more than a dozen nations. Outside groups have spent $464 million in support of her and more than $393 million in opposition. By comparison, Trump has benefited from $75 million of outside spending supporting him, while facing $124 million in outside spending against him. Add that to the more than $1 billion in independent expenditures, and the price tag of the presidential campaign reaches $2 billion.
