South Korea is seeking a meeting with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach after its 143 athletes were wrongly introduced as North Korean during the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics. North Korea, which has 16 athletes as part of its first delegation since 2016, was properly introduced later in the program in French and English. South Korea and North Korea have been established as separate entities since 1948 and have been in conflict after the Korean War of the early 1950s. In 2012, organizers in London blamed “human error” after a flag of South Korea was displayed alongside North Korea’s women’s team ahead of a game in the soccer tournament.

An Iraqi judoka has recorded the first positive doping test of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said on Friday. A statement from the ITA said that Sajjad Sehen tested positive for the banned anabolic steroids metandienone and boldenone during out-of-competition anti-doping control in Paris on July 23. AdvertisementThe Games begin officially with the opening ceremony in the French capital on Friday night. Sehen has the right to request the analysis of his B sample but won’t now be eligible to take up his place in the competition. “The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Olympic Games Paris 2024,” an ITA statement read.

The USMNT are out of the Copa America on the final night of Group C.A much-debated Mathias Olivera goal for Uruguay put them behind on the night and coupled with Panama beating Bolivia in the other game on the night saw them progress through alongside Uruguay. Uruguay win Group C with Panama advancing alongside them in second place. The USMNT suffered a shock defeat to Panama on Thursday to leave their chances of progression beyond the group in doubt. For the USMNT to advance to the knockout phase, their result against Uruguay in their final group-stage game needed to match or better Panama’s result against Bolivia. In the event of a tie on points at the end of the group goal difference is the first tiebreaker before goals scored and then head-to-head record.
