CNN —The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York released the first renderings of its revamped wing for modern and contemporary art, a $550-million project spanning around 126,000 square feet and designed by Frida Escobedo, the first female architect to design a wing in the museum’s 154-year history. “The wing will comprise a three-story base supporting recessed fourth and fifth floors,” a representative for Escobedo’s studio said in a statement. The museum is in the final stages of a $70-million upgrade of its Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, which houses African, ancient American and Oceanic art galleries. In addition, the Met recently completed both a rehang of its American Wing to mark its centennial and a new interactive learning center.

The White House said Tuesday that Biden would veto the bill – passed unanimously by the Senate this summer and set for a House vote this week – that would add judgeships to the most overburdened federal courthouses in the country. Judges across the ideological spectrum have warned that staffing shortages have created a major backlog in cases. Democrats are now pointing to House GOP leadership’s failure to do so as reason why they’re reversing their support. Judges – including in interviews with CNN – have said that the judiciary faces a staffing crisis that is undermining litigants’ right to speedy justice. Lawmakers may try to get the bill passed in the new Congress, but getting Democratic support may require delaying the first allocation of new judges until 2029, when White House control will be unknown.

SEOUL, South Korea — When South Koreans came out to defend democracy this week in the face of a surprise martial law declaration by their president, history was weighing heavily on their minds. South Korea, a key U.S. ally, is the world’s 10th-largest economy and a vibrant Asian democracy in a region where authoritarianism is on the rise. But the country of 50 million people spent decades under military-authoritarian rule, with martial law frequently declared and those who resisted it sometimes killed. But then they ended up at the National Assembly.”Their job was to prevent lawmakers from entering, since the legislature’s operations had been banned under the martial law proclamation. Historically, “whenever South Korean authoritarian leaders wanted to declare martial law, they typically sought at least some kind of tacit approval from Washington,” Jo said.

New “eco-district” Mareterra, which has been built into the Mediterranean Sea, expands the microstate’s land mass by almost 15 acres. Inaugurated by Monaco’s Prince Albert II on Wednesday, the €2 billion ($2.1 billion) luxury development features a marina, seaside promenade and swathes of new high-end housing. The new development features more than 100 new luxury apartments in one of the world's most densely populated places. The results have turned heads in the ultra-competitive real estate business. "It's one of the best positioned real estate players today," Goldfarb added, noting that he has an "overweight" – or buy – rating on Newmark stock. Strangio, an attorney for the ACLU, is set to make history Wednesday as the first known transgender person to argue before the US Supreme Court. With hindsight, Strangio’s career can appear like it’s been hurtling toward this week’s Supreme Court appearance. Esseks often gets asked, he said, whether the ACLU tapped Strangio to present its case before the Supreme Court because he’s trans. The Supreme Court ruling also could be life-altering for physicians like Dr. Izzy Lowell, whose telehealth practice, QueerMed, provides hormone therapy and other services for transgender and nonbinary people. “I think about all of the arguments that have that have been held in the Supreme Court over just the basic dignity of people.

Macron was joined by his wife, Brigitte, and Laurent Ulrich, the archbishop of Paris, as he made his way around the restored building. Bright winter sunshine lit up the stained-glass windows and creamy stonework gleaming in place of huge charred holes. In the square outside, Macron was surrounded by crowds of cheering artisans, architects, business leaders and donors. The charred oak ceiling that was punctured by the spire that crashed into it has been replaced with new wood. “It was a challenge many deemed impossible, yet one we will have met on,” Macron said.

The resurrection of Notre Dame – the treasured Gothic gem in the heart of Paris struck by a devastating fire in 2019 – has been a closely guarded secret. Few had seen the meticulous work of architects, artisans and master craftspeople who have carefully brought the cathedral back to life. Many will remember watching in horror five years ago as bright orange flames engulfed the 860-year-old Gothic cathedral, its famed spire toppling from the Paris skyline. At the time, Macron vowed the beloved building would be restored and set an ambitious deadline of five years. Fast forward 2,055 days, the seemingly impossible has been achieved and the €700 million ($737 million) restoration is complete.

The leaders of Harris’ presidential campaign in an interview released Tuesday defended their decisions and blamed a variety of external factors for the Democrat’s defeat three weeks ago. Harris’ top aides did not reveal any notable regrets and suggested that, with more time, the vice president might have fared better. Though she seemed less inclined to pass along the blame, the vice president also suggested the short campaign hamstrung her chances. President Trump is for you.” The spot used Harris’ own words, highlighting support for taxpayer-funded sex reassignment surgeries for transgender prisoners. “I think that it made her seem out of touch.”Yet the architects of the Harris campaign dismissed suggestions that some Democrats have made since the election that not responding to the ad played a major role in Harris’ defeat.

PARIS — Most have on jeans, some wear rough work boots, and one sings with a white construction helmet tucked under his arm. The 80-strong choir has come together to do more than sing, though — the crew of architects, stonemasons, archaeologists, art historians, art conservators and others have helped rebuild Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral after a fire ripped through the iconic French Gothic masterpiece nearly five years ago. Much like the building and rebuilding of a cathedral, a small army of individuals needs to work in unison to create extraordinary music. Just weeks before, she and her husband had taken their children to visit the cathedral — and now it was at risk of being reduced to rubble and ashes, she remembers. “Everyone was very sad and very anxious about the potential collapse of the cathedral overnight,” she said.

If the Trump administration still allows trans people to change the gender marker on their passport, Greenesmith said, it might require them to provide proof of gender-reassignment surgery, putting gender-marker changes out of reach for the majority of trans people.
