Three EPA whistleblowers told ProPublica on Thursday that their complaints were the subject of the reports (which redact employee names). After endorsing Trump, Kennedy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the U.S. could “revisit pesticide and other chemical-use standards” if Trump wins. “The EPA was sort of paralyzed under the Trump administration,” she said. It’s not yet clear what Kennedy’s role might be in a potential Trump administration, or which decisions he’d help to make as part of the transition team. Even with Kennedy’s ties to Trump, Gartner said she would expect the EPA under a second Trump administration to act similarly to the first one.

CNN —A beautiful, remarkably well-preserved mosaic that was “hidden for thousands of years” has been uncovered by archaeologists in northwestern England. Scutt added that archaeologists can’t be completely sure of its function because they have only had a “glimpse” of it. The mosaic likely dates to the 2nd century. Courtesy English HeritageDiscovering such a mosaic, particularly one that dates back to the early 2nd century, was an unexpected boon for the archaeologists. The monumental building measures 8m wide and is 50m long.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Neighborhoods in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state remained flooded Monday more than a day after torrential rains that killed at least 11 people. Some people drowned and were killed in landslides, while at least three died after being electrocuted. Authorities intervened in over 200 incidents due to the flooding across the state, according to a statement from Rio’s civil defense. Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology had warned Thursday of the potential for heavy rain in Rio, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais due to a combination of heat, humidity and areas of low pressure in the atmosphere. In February 2023, heavy rain caused flooding and landslides that killed at least 48 people in Sao Paulo state.

Video of the incident in Blendon Township on Aug. 24 followed demands by the family of the 21-year-old woman, Ta'Kiya Young, for the officer who fired the fatal shot to be held accountable. "A theft suspect drove her car into one of my officers and the officer fired a single shot through the windshield," Blendon Police Chief John Belford said in a statement accompanying the release. Video made public on Friday shows an officer standing next to Young's vehicle as he repeatedly orders her to get out. A second officer comes around the front of vehicle and points a gun at the windshield, demanding that she exits. Young can be seen turning the wheels to the right, away from the officer, before the vehicle begins moving toward him.

From ‘Front-Page Girls’ to Newsroom Leaders

Yet few readers today will place Ross’s name, let alone those of the “front-page girls” she celebrated. Papers with strapped budgets took on more women, a trajectory that mirrors the history of professions like teaching and nursing. Still, as late as the 1950s, Kroeger writes, “women journalists inched across a swinging rope bridge toward fuller acceptance but still in single file.” Their pluck went only so far. Between 1970 and 1983, anti-discrimination suits roiled The Times, Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post and The Associated Press, among other outlets. Before those proceedings, women had tended to cluster “on the bottom rungs of a company ladder with broken steps,” Kroeger writes.
United Furniture Industries founder David Belford has remained silent and unreachable since firing 2,700 employees last week. Belford allegedly shut down a plan to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy days before the layoffs, the New York Post reported. Staffers were terminated in late-night emails and texts sent right before Thanksgiving. In the messages, sent just before midnight, UFI said it was laying off "all employees" due to "unforeseen business circumstances." "Belford said, 'We are not going forward with a Chapter 11,'" Hearn told the New York Post.
