A Texas man was sentenced Tuesday to more than three years in federal prison for kicking a cat “as if kicking a football field goal” in a case of abuse that was recorded and shared on social media, prosecutors said. Donaldvan Williams, 30, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas said in a statement. “Williams did not render or try to procure aid for the cat, but instead kicked the cat as if kicking a football field goal,” prosecutors wrote in a statement that Williams signed. The kick was recorded by another man, Decorius Mire, who encouraged Williams to kick the cat, prosecutors said. Each man's guilty plea dealt with kicking the cat and recording it, not the animal's being set on fire, records show.

My husband converted to Christianity two years before our wedding, so we had a Christian wedding ceremony. “If it is a larger wedding, you might only be able to tell the couple how beautiful the wedding is and move on,” she said. The couple are balancing difficult roles as both the guests of honor and hosts of their wedding, Kuehl said. “The most important thing parents need to do is … realize this wedding is in no way about them,” she said. “You are there to facilitate and help, so your children can get married and have a lovely wedding — most importantly, the wedding they wanted.”

If your day has ever been clouded by a coworker being annoying over email or Slack, you're not alone. In fact, 44% of employees participating in a recent Kickresume survey said that written communication, which includes messages or emails, is a common site of workplace annoyance. These small annoyances are related to the concept of incivility, which Bowling describes as "low-level aggression" that manifests as rudeness. I think if you think about what is most kind or considerate and respectful to your colleagues, then that's what you should do." Here are two ways to deal with annoying emails and messages, according to Bowling and Meier.

“So this is going to be incredibly painful for CrowdStrike customers.”And even if your business had nothing to do with CrowdStrike, the outage still might have ruined your day. You didn’t have to be a CrowdStrike customer to get screwed by the company’s mistake, and that’s what made Friday’s outage so frustrating. But the scale of the CrowdStrike outage is once again underscoring just how interconnected the world has become through a network almost none of us understands and which is largely self-regulating. Microsoft estimated the CrowdStrike outage affected some 8.5 million Windows devices. “Our tech platforms have a mix of legacy systems coupled with modern systems, which means that the weakest link determines the overall system performance.

The CrowdStrike software at fault operates at what’s called the kernel level of a computer, a much deeper level than what more ordinary applications such as browsers or video games do. For businesses with hundreds or thousands of laptops, desktops and servers running CrowdStrike’s security software, an individual human may have to perform that process over and over and over again. Because CrowdStrike’s security software is running on countless individual computers all around the globe, the update that got pushed to those devices caused them all to shut down, virtually simultaneously. The CrowdStrike bug may have initially been conflated with the Microsoft issue because CrowdStrike’s error affected only Windows machines. As of Friday morning, Microsoft said the issue with Microsoft 365 had been resolved and that the situation was improving.

The ‘Other Marine’ of French Politics Hits Back
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Roger Cohen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Marine Tondelier, the leader of the Greens, is told that she is sometimes called “the other Marine” of French politics, she hits back firmly. “No!” she says. “Le Pen is the other Marine.”Given how rapidly Ms. Tondelier’s star has risen in recent months, her response is not outrageous. Less than two weeks later, the profoundly intractable new National Assembly of three large political blocs — left, center and nationalist right — gathers for the first time on Thursday. As it does, one question looms over a left-wing alliance that seems more fractured by the day: What to do with its about 190 seats in the 577-seat lower house when that is far short of an absolute majority?

Francois Lo Presti | Afp | Getty ImagesFrench voters are heading to the polls on Sunday for the second and final round of voting in a snap parliamentary election. By offering voters a starker choice and fewer candidates, RN's opponents hope that the electorate will opt for the non-RN candidate. "For instance, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said voters should vote neither for the RN nor candidates from the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party. At the same time, current Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has called for everyone to vote against the RN." If the choice was between a far-left and far-right candidate, however, the picture was more nuanced, showing a split vote.

Francois Lo Presti | Afp | Getty ImagesLONDON — A somewhat strange and ironic political shift has gripped Europe over the last few years. "There's an anti-incumbency mood again in Europe," Dan Stevens, professor of politics at Exeter University, told CNBC. Shared concernsThe U.K. is not alone in looking for a political change of scenery. A similar shift has been observed in much of western and eastern Europe in recent years, with hard-right populist and nationalist parties upsetting and unseating the old political establishment. Political analysts point out that, although far-right political parties in France, Germany and Italy made gains in the recent European Parliament elections, they also did not perform quite as well as expected.

Top of the list of sensitivities is likely to be foreign policy, where Le Pen and Macron rarely see eye to eye. CNN —Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party has taken the lead in the first round of France’s parliamentary elections on Sunday, initial projections showed, as President Emmanuel Macron’s party slumped to third place. The RN election party in the northern town of Henin Beaumont erupted in celebration as the results were announced. “Nothing has been won – and the second round will be decisive,” she said. Sunday’s vote was held three years earlier than necessary and just three weeks after Macron’s party was trounced by the RN at the European Parliament elections. Total voter turnout on Sunday is expected to be 65.5%, the highest in a first round of parliamentary elections since 1997 – according to Ipsos estimates.

Soon, he could well become prime minister if RN wins an absolute majority in the forthcoming parliamentary elections — and he's only 28. Bardella's rise from party spokesman in 2017 to party president over the course of five years is somewhat remarkable for a man who is only 28. Bardella excelled in economics and social sciences at a private college and joined National Rally — then known as the National Front — at the age of 16. Two years later, he became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) before being made party president in 2022. Microsoft said an artificial intelligence feature on new PCs that captures screenshots and enables searching of user activity will be off by default after security researchers determined that attackers could access the underlying data. The Recall feature was one of the main capabilities Microsoft showed during a press briefing last month for forthcoming Copilot+ PCs with AI computing power onboard. Microsoft has already added the Copilot conversational chatbot into Windows in a way that resembles OpenAI's popular ChatGPT. Microsoft is adding security protections to Recall in addition to requiring people to manually turn it on once Copilot+ PCs become available on June 18.

The speaker of the Texas House, Dade Phelan, won renomination in a runoff on Tuesday, surviving a bruising Republican primary challenge from a party activist and first-time candidate who was backed by former President Donald J. Trump and his Texas supporters. The race, in a southeast Texas district that includes part of the city of Beaumont, was a bitter political showdown among some of the most powerful players in Texas politics, and was likely to have been one of the most expensive ever for a Texas House seat. Millions poured in to the campaigns during the primary, including large donations from West Texas oil and gas billionaires and out-of-state school-choice advocates who backed the challenger, David Covey. For his part, Mr. Phelan had help from deep-pocketed donors like Miriam Adelson, the Las Vegas casino magnate and widow of the Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson. Covey, a technical adviser to the oil and gas industry who has described himself as a “very committed Christian and a conservative,” led Mr. Phelan in the first round of voting in March, when neither candidate won a majority.

Some climate activists accuse the industry of simply investing in carbon capture as way to extend the use of oil and gas. The technology typically uses chemical absorption to capture carbon dioxide emitted from the chimney of an industrial plant. "The economic viability of carbon capture and sequestration is a challenge today because the cost of building most plants in order to capture carbon dioxide are very significant," the executive said. About two-thirds of the industry's carbon dioxide emissions come from chemical reactions that occur when breaking down limestone. SLB this month announced a nearly $400 million investment in Aker Carbon Capture, a pure-play carbon capture company based in Norway, in an effort to accelerate deployment of the technology at commercial scale.

And now that they’re back, employers are having to address a new issue: some employees have forgotten how to behave in the office. The growing workplace etiquette business is just the latest example of companies’ efforts to adjust to the hybrid work era — ensuring that they have productive teams while keeping workers happy. It’s not just in-person trainings — office etiquette tips have become popular fodder for social media content, from TikTok videos to LinkedIn courses. Sydney, Australia CNN —The alleged murder of a young Sydney couple by a serving police officer has opened a tragic new chapter in the troubled history between the force and the city’s LGBT+ community and cast a shadow over Mardi Gras, a vibrant annual celebration of their culture. The bodies of Sydney couple Luke Davies and Jesse Baird were found a week after their alleged murder. Adding to that distress was a photo circulated widely of the alleged killer marching in police uniform at the 2020 Mardi Gras. The couple's alleged murder has cast a shadow over the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. Recommendations to police included reinvestigating some of the suspected hate crimes murders, but also for officers to take courses in LGBT+ bias and to improve relations with the LGBT+ community.
