An Alabama inmate convicted in a 1994 murder is poised to die Thursday in the state's third nitrogen hypoxia execution this year. Carey Dale Grayson asked to have his execution carried out by nitrogen gas. It refused to do so when Alabama executed Kenneth Smith, the first person in the U.S. to die in a nitrogen gas execution, in January and again in September, when the state executed Alan Miller in a second nitrogen gas execution. Since then, Alabama has become the first state to develop a nitrogen hypoxia execution protocol in addition to lethal injection. “The State of Alabama’s nitrogen protocol has been used twice and has not worked as they swore it would.

Ann Wang | ReutersThis report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Even though Nvidia's third-quarter revenue soared 94% on an annual basis, it's a slower pace than Nvidia's growth in the previous three quarters, when sales rose 122%, 262%, and 265%, respectively, as CNBC's Kif Leswing notes. The same goes for Nvidia's forward guidance: A growth of around 70% for current-quarter sales, compared with a year earlier. It appears that investors have enjoyed Nvidia's astounding performance for so long they've become desensitized to it.

Target reported earnings Wednesday that came in far below Wall Street's expectations, something the big-box retailer attributed to slower-than-expected demand. The company announced profits that missed forecasts by 20%, its widest miss in two years. Broader stock trading did not immediately react, however, as Wall Street awaits earnings from chipmaker Nvidia, which has helped power the market higher throughout the year. Target's report comes a day after rival Walmart reported earnings and revenues that beat expectations. “We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey told CNBC.

"When we price the goods the first time, we want you to say, 'wow, that's a great price, and how gorgeous is that product?'" Williams-Sonoma beat earnings and raised its outlook, sending shares to a new all-time high to finish up 27.54% by close. Alber critiqued the short-term promotion and discount pricing strategy sometimes used by other retailers, saying this approach isn't successful in the long term, as customers become "trained to wait for that promotion." She suggested customers trust the "pricing integrity" of Williams-Sonoma when it initially prices items. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday said consumers right now aren't focused on brand names, but on companies that can provide the most value. The big box retailer cut its full-year guidance, and management said it saw weakness in discretionary products despite price cuts. Although the two retailers offer similar products, Cramer said Walmart is simply more affordable. He also named other discount outfits that are seeing success despite a tough consumer landscape, including Costco , TJX , Chili's-parent Brinker and Texas Roadhouse . Simply put, the leading maker of AI chips again fell victim to the curse of high expectations. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Now, as we start this next generation, we'll be seeing models run on 100,000 Blackwell chips — and scaling is still in effect. Huang's argument is that going beyond 100,000 Blackwell chips will yield even more capable models. It's a fair question to ask because Nvidia's stock has historically taken a pretty big hit when its customers – such as cloud-computing providers – start uttering that phrase.

China's central bank on Wednesday kept major benchmark lending rates unchanged, as Beijing assesses the effects of its recent stimulus measures. The People's Bank of China said it would keep the 1-year loan prime rate at 3.1%, and the 5-year LPR at 3.6%.
