Generic drugs are the backbone of medicines prescribed in the U.S.: They account for about 90% of all prescriptions filled, according to the Association for Accessible Medicines, a trade group that represents generic drugmakers. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson on Trump’s transition team, declined to say whether Trump planned to grant an exemption on generic drugs. According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a group that tracks drug shortages, there are 277 active drug shortages in the U.S., half of which have persisted for two or more years. That’s different from generic drugs, which are cheaper and are often sold at close to the cost for which they were made, he said. What concerns Kesselheim the most is that tariffs could cause generic drug prices to skyrocket should more generic drug manufacturers drop out.

It's a dynamic that has forced many election officials out of the industry, while those who remain have taken in some cases dramatic steps to protect poll workers and voters ahead of Election Day. Some poll workers are also receiving pay bumps as incentives to stay on through a stressful voting period. In interviews, county and state election officials shared details of security plans with NBC News. The county allocated money for so-called panic buttons that would allow election workers to quickly contact authorities in emergencies. They decided to give police radios to election workers instead.

Autonomous taxis are winning over women in cities like San Francisco by offering an answer to a long-standing concern about ride-hailing apps: misbehavior by human drivers, especially men. Now, those driver safety concerns are helping to fuel the popularity of autonomous taxis — especially for women traveling alone or at night. About three-quarters of Lyft and Uber drivers are men, according to industry and academic surveys. Lyft said in a statement to NBC News that it continues to try to improve safety, including with driver background checks, driver ratings, driver education and an emergency phone line for passengers. In 2023, Lyft started a feature, Women+ Connect, that allows women or nonbinary drivers to opt in to prefer riders who are women or nonbinary, and vice versa.

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. Expensive fuel, maintenance, and labor don't help, nor do unpredictable setbacks outside the airline's control, like pandemic travel bans and production slowdowns at planemaker Boeing. But across the industry, many airlines are struggling to turn profits thanks to issues like overcapacity, unrelenting competition, and unexpectedly high costs, according to experts. Boeing delivery delays have eaten into profitsHarteveldt said Boeing's ongoing delivery delays have cost airlines like American, Southwest, and United millions of dollars. Airlines are plagued by high costs in an extremely competitive industryNearly everything is more expensive than it was before the pandemic, and airlines are no exception. For low-cost carriers like Frontier and Spirit, these high costs make it challenging to make money, Kraemer said.
