Investigators in Russia are looking into the death of Vladimir Shklyarov, a principal dancer at the world-famous Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, after he fell from an apartment block balcony and died at the age of 39. Police in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second city, say initial information suggests his fall, which was discovered early on Saturday morning, was the result of an accident, state media have reported. Shklyarov was famous outside Russia too, having danced at the Royal Ballet in London and at the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich. “He went out onto the balcony to get some air and smoke, lost his balance (it’s a very narrow balcony) and fell (from the fifth floor). The father of two young children was reportedly divorced from his ballerina wife Maria Shirinkina, a first soloist at the Mariinsky.

Germany's inflation surged to 2.4% in October, back above the European Central Bank's 2% target, even as the country narrowly avoided a technical recession in the third quarter. The preliminary print, announced by German statistics office Destatis, is harmonized across the euro area for comparability. Harmonized inflation had dropped to 1.8% in September, after coming in at the European Central Bank's 2% target in August. So-called core inflation, which strips out more volatile food and energy costs, came in at 2.9% in October, the German statistics office said Wednesday, an increase from the 2.7% reading of September. In a note translated by CNBC, Deutsche Bank economist Sebastian Becker said that the renewed rise in core inflation showed that the problem of growth in price increases was not resolved, and that further patience was needed.

In all, Lilium was trying to raise a convertible loan of 100 million euros. The subsidiaries' planned insolvency filings could result in Lilium ultimately delisting from the Nasdaq Global Select Market, or having its shares suspended.

They told the librarians they were Ukrainians fleeing war and asked to consult 19th-century first editions of works by Alexander Pushkin, Russia’s national poet, and Nikolai Gogol. Police are now investigating what they believe is a vast, coordinated series of thefts of rare 19th-century Russian books — primarily first and early editions of Pushkin — from libraries across Europe. CNN —A Polish man has been charged over claims he assisted an alleged Russian plot to assassinate Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to authorities in Poland and Ukraine. Prosecutors said the man agreed to provide information to Russian spies about security at Rzeszów-Jasionka airport, in southeastern Poland, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the border with Ukraine. CNN —German authorities have been tracking down the former members of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a now-defunct Cold War-era militant group, who have been on the run for nearly 30 years. The RAF, he said, emerged in what was then West Berlin, at the “crossroads” of the Cold War. The first, and most prominent period from 1970-1977, saw the group murder public officials and US soldiers and take many hostages. In April 1975, six RAF members seized the West German Embassy in Stockholm in a hostage standoff with the goal of forcing the release of imprisoned RAF members. The Red Army Faction claimed responsibility for the assassination, but the perpetrators were never brought to justice.

MUNICH, Germany — Security forces descended on Munich, Germany on Friday as global leaders gathered for the city's annual security conference, which this year looks likely to be among the most consequential in its 60-year history. Dubbed the "Davos of Defense," the Munich Security Conference will see an estimated 60 heads of state and over 85 government officials meet for three days in the Bavarian city to discuss current and future global security issues.
