For the third quarter, Uber expects bookings of $40.25 billion to $41.75 billion. Uber's "monthly active platform consumers" (MAPCs) reached 156 million in the second quarter with 2.77 billion trips via the Uber platform. This compares to 137 million MAPCs and 2.28 billion trips during the same period a year ago. Uber also reported $1.02 billion in net income for the quarter, which included a $333 million pre-tax benefit from "revaluations of Uber's equity investments." The companies also plan "to collaborate on future BYD autonomous-capable vehicles to be deployed on the Uber platform," Uber said on Tuesday.

Cars that run on hydrogen emit zero carbon at the tailpipe, but 96% of the world’s hydrogen is still derived from fossil fuels like methane gas. That makes most hydrogen-powered cars much more polluting than battery electric vehicles, or EVs, and only marginally cleaner than traditional combustion engine cars. Toyota is supplying the Game’s official fleet, which includes 500 Mirai cars and 10 coaches that run on hydrogen, as well as 1,150 EVs, to ferry athletes around. It is also one a few major automakers betting on hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well. Hydrogen vehicles have so far failed to take off as a popular choice for consumers, and very little infrastructure to refuel with hydrogen exists.

China EV maker BYD to build $1 billion plant in Turkey

Hong Kong CNN —China’s BYD, which vies with Tesla for the title of the world’s top maker of battery electric vehicles, has agreed to build a $1 billion car factory in Turkey, the Turkish government has announced. “We aim to meet the growing demand for new-energy vehicles in the region and reach consumers in Europe,” the statement cited BYD representatives as saying. The EU’s decision earlier this year imposed an extra 17.4% tariff on the vehicles BYD ships from China to the bloc, which also has a standard 10% duty on all car imports. Talks between the EU and China are expected to continue but, if no agreement is reached, the additional tariffs will become definitive in November. BYD already announced in December that it would build an EV factory in EU member Hungary, becoming the first major Chinese automaker to build passenger cars in Europe.

That's slightly more than Nio 's 87,426 deliveries for the first six months of 2024, although Nio continued to recover from sluggish performance earlier in the year with a record 21,209 deliveries in June. BEIJING — Chinese electric car company Zeekr said Monday it delivered a record number of vehicles in June, making its deliveries for the first half of the year the largest among U.S.-listed Chinese companies only selling pure electric cars. Plug-in hybrid cars accounted for a slightly greater share than battery electric vehicles, and saw faster growth at 39.5% versus 17.7% for battery-only cars. Car companies need to improve the battery charging process, Wan Gang, the man credited with spearheading China's electric car strategy, said at a conference last week. As part of efforts to boost consumption, China this year has launched a trade-in policy to incentivize new energy vehicle sales.

While missing a host of brands, this year's edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show debuted a range of new models. But at least one automaker says it is ramping up its North American EV strategy in 2024: Honda Motor Company. Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesElectric vehicle sales have risen sharply this year, led by growth in China and a strong demand for hybrid vehicles in particular, according to a report from Counterpoint Research. Sales of hybrid vehicles, which have both electric motors and combustion engines, vastly outpaced those of full battery-powered alternatives, rising 46% year over year. China extends leadChinese companies have been a huge beneficiary of the rise in demand for electric vehicles, especially firms that sell both BEVs as well as hybrids. According to Counterpoint, EV sales in China jumped 28% in the first quarter of 2023, amid an ongoing price war that has pushed down costs for consumers. But, while overall EV sales in the U.S. rose 2%, those of battery electric vehicles declined by 3% in the quarter.

Lower pricing due to softening demand helped April electric vehicle sales at Ford more than double, even as the automaker was shifting resources away from the money-losing unit. Despite the volume increases, Ford Model e saw losses widen in Q1 to $1.32 billion on just $100 million in quarterly sales. Ford's hybrid sales in April rose almost 60% to 17,997 units. We believe a buyback would be a catalyst for Ford stock just like it has been for General Motors , which announced its repurchase plan back in November. General Motors is buying back a ton of stock; Ford, so far, not so much. Before the buyback disclosure late this year, Ford had been down 10%, which was less than GM's 14% decline. In 2023, Ford spent $5.33 billion on dividends and stock repurchases, with only 6.3% of that total on buybacks. In guidance alongside Q4 numbers, Ford said it expects warranty costs for full-year 2024 to be flat year over year. In 2023, Tesla sold around 230,000 more cars than BYD. That drop was big enough for Tesla, which sold 386,810 BEVs in the same period, to retake its former position despite posting plunging sales. Both Tesla and BYD are expanding beyond their home markets and investing in factories abroad. BYD sold about 3 million electric cars, including hybrids, in 2023 globally. By comparison, Tesla, which does not sell hybrids, delivered a total of 1.8 million vehicles worldwide last year, which was about 19% of the global market for BEVs.

Net profit almost doubled to 30 billion yuan ($4.2 billion) last year, from 16.6 billion yuan ($2.3 billion) in 2022, the Shenzhen-based company said Tuesday. BYD sold 525,409 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) during that period, compared with Tesla’s 484,507. In 2023 as a whole, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, up 62% from 2022. Its entry-level model sells in China for the equivalent of just over $10,000; the cheapest Tesla car, a Model 3, costs almost $39,000. But intensifying competition and a brutal price war last year have impacted the profit margins of many Chinese car makers, including BYD.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersThe Biden administration announced new automobile emissions standards Wednesday that officials called the most ambitious plan ever to cut planet-warming emissions from passenger vehicles. The rules come as sales of electric vehicles, which are needed to meet the standards, have begun to slow. The agency is finalizing the rule as sales of clean vehicles, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, hit record highs last year. At the same time, the Democratic president needs cooperation from the auto industry and political support from auto workers, a key political voting bloc. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday that White House officials "don't have any concerns" about the final EPA rule.

Bentley Motors is pushing back its plans to exclusively offer all-electric vehicles by the end of this decade due to changing market conditions and a delay in its first EV. CEO Adrian Hallmark said the famed British luxury carmaker remains committed to carbon neutrality and exclusively offering EVs, but it now plans to do so a couple of years later. Bentley will continue offering plug-in hybrids alongside BEVs, or battery electric vehicles, past its previous target of 2030, Hallmark said. Bentley is among a growing number of automakers to change, delay or cancel ambitious EV plans as global adoption grows slower than many expected. The company now expects its first EV to be released in 2026, pushing back the release of the subsequent vehicles as well.

The original Biden administration proposal would have lowered such "petroleum-equivalent fuel economy" ratings for EVs by 72% in 2027. The industry cheered the Energy Department announcement. Automakers, auto dealers and the UAW called the original EPA plan unrealistic. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Sierra Club had urged EV mileage rating reductions after the Energy Department left them unchanged for two decades. "The automakers' free ride is over," he said, adding that changes "will curtail automakers' use of phantom credits they used to keep selling gas-guzzlers."
