Law enforcement missed critical opportunities to prevent a 2022 mass shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado, a pair of lawsuits filed over the weekend allege. The suits claim that the massacre at Club Q in Colorado Springs, which killed five people and injured at least 19, could have been averted if authorities had enforced Colorado’s red flag law. The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners and former El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder are named as defendants in the suits, which accuse them of negligence and, in the case of the deceased victims, wrongful death. A spokesperson for El Paso County declined to comment on the allegations, citing the pending litigation. The El Paso County defendants “willfully and wantonly ignored the shooter’s warning signs,” the legal documents say.

CNN —Victims and family members of those killed in the 2022 mass shooting at the LGBTQIA+ Club Q in Colorado Springs have sued the El Paso County Board of Commissioners and others, alleging authorities could have prevented the shooting if they had enforced the state’s “red flag law” against the gunman. One was filed by the families of the dead victims and five victims themselves – a second was filed by Barrett Hudson, who sustained seven gunshot wounds. “The shooter had a history of violent threats and behavior that clearly warranted intervention,” the suits say. The suits allege that, despite the shooter’s “history of violent threats and behavior that clearly warranted prevention … El Paso County law enforcement failed to invoke the Red Flag Law, in light of policies against its use.”In 2019, a year before the law came into effect, the Board of El Paso County Commissioners approved a resolution to designate the county a so-called Second Amendment Sanctuary. With a 6-3 conservative majority including three Trump appointees, the court has spent the last few years buffeted by criticism from the left. The Trump administration also suffered a big loss when in 2020 the court ruled 6-3 to extend workplace discrimination protections to LGBTQ employees, a decision that angered conservatives. CNN —Ancient DNA has revealed surprises about the identities of some people who perished in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii after a volcanic eruption, overturning misconceptions about their genetic relationships, ancestry and sex. Ash and volcanic rock called pumice then covered Pompeii and its residents, preserving scenes of the victims of the city’s destruction like an eerie time capsule. While the Greeks, Etruscans and Samnites attempted to conquer it, Pompeii became a Roman colony, the study authors noted. In 2015, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii began efforts to restore 86 of the 104 casts originally made by Fiorelli. Together, park scientists and the study authors are working on a larger project to better understand the genetic diversity present in Pompeii during the Roman Empire.

With so much at stake, CNN has identified 10 races to watch on Tuesday – grouped into buckets that nod to broader themes across the House landscape. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided against seeking a fourth term, instead launching a campaign for governor in 2025. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has crafted a moderate profile by challenging his party on issues ranging from spending to immigration. This year she faces a challenge from GOP state Rep. The hackers also targeted prominent Democrats including the staff of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, another source briefed on the matter told CNN. There are no indications anyone was able to access data related to Jared Kushner or his devices, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. The Trump campaign is operating under the assumption that the hackers could still have access to the phone communications they targeted that belong to Trump and Vance, two of the sources said. Given how pervasive the Chinese hacking campaign has been in US telecom networks, some US allies are checking their own computer networks for signs of compromise. The ongoing Chinese hacking campaign means that the next administration — whether Trump or Harris wins — will likely inherit another major cybersecurity incident with big implications for national security.

At least a dozen mail ballots were stolen, fraudulently filled out and submitted in Colorado for the Nov. 5 election, the Colorado secretary of state’s office said Thursday. Authorities said the ballots were mailed into the Mesa County election office via USPS, not returned in drop boxes. The secretary of state’s office said nearly all of the votes cast on the stolen ballots were stopped before they were counted. But three ballots were counted before election officials could pull them from the process because they passed signature verification. Mesa County has been home to election conspiracies in recent years, including by former Republican Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who was recently convicted in a 2021 security breach of the county’s election system.
